Ohio Wrestling Battles Back For Thrilling Win At Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. -- The Ohio wrestling team (4-4, 2-1 MAC) erased a 12-point deficit by winning the final four bouts for a thrilling 21-18 road victory over Mid-American Conference foe Northern Illinois (5-8, 1-4 MAC) today at NIU'S Convocation Center.

The Huskies led the Bobcats, 18-6, through the first six weight classes, with redshirt sophomore Kenny Moore winning in a 7-1 sudden victory at 165 pounds, redshirt freshman Brit Wilson coming away with a pin in 2:04 at 165, redshirt freshman Will Feldkamp winning by fall in 49 seconds at 184 and redshirt junior Caleb Gossett winning by a 6-4 decision at 285.

Ohio began its comeback at 125, though, as redshirt junior Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) picked a 6-4 win by decision over redshirt freshman Bryce West, improving Laney to 3-0 on the season in conference action.

Redshirt sophomore Mario Guillen (Perrysburg, Ohio) cut Ohio's deficit to six points with a 3-1 sudden victory over redshirt senior Alijah Jeffery at 133. Guillen is now 8-1 on the year -- including a 3-0 mark in MAC matches.

Senior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) then swung momentum in favor of the Bobcats by tying the team score at 18-all courtesy of a 4:47 victory by fall at 141 over redshirt freshman Drew West. Kelly earned his third pin of the year and improved to 10-2 in 2018-19 -- including a 3-0 mark in league matches.

Redshirt freshman Alec Hagan (Eureka, Mo.) then delivered the win for Ohio, coming away victorious in an 8-6 tiebraker over redshirt junior McCoy Kent at 149.

The match opened at 157, with redshirt junior Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio) picking up a 3-2 win by decision over redshirt freshman Mason Kauffman to give the Bobcats the early 3-0 lead. Carson is now 15-5 on the year. Making his Ohio debut, graduate student Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.) provided his new team with its only other victory in the first six bouts, winning by a 3-1 score in sudden victory over redshirt sophomore Max Ihry at 197.

Ohio will be back on the road next Sunday (Feb. 3) when it takes on Central Michigan in a 2 p.m. ET matchup at McGuirk Arena in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
