BUFFALO, N.Y.
– On a cold and rainy day, the Ohio softball team (35-14, 16-7 MAC) completed a doubleheader sweep of Buffalo (9-45, 3-20 MAC) Saturday afternoon (May 6) at Dobson Field at D’Youville College. The Bobcats defeated the Bulls 9-3 in game one and then came back in game two to defeat Buffalo, 11-9.

GAME ONE: Ohio 9, Buffalo 3
Ohio would strike first in the top of the first inning when Mikayla Cooper (Delaware, Ohio) led the game off with a single up the middle. She would then move to second when Alexa Holland (Rochester, Ind.) executed a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Alex Day (Hilliard, Ohio) and Natalie Alvarez (Long Beach, Calif.) would both draw walks to load the bases, bringing Morgan Geno (Chillicothe, Ohio) to the plate. Geno would then hit a two-RBI single down the right field line, scoring Cooper and Day. Buffalo would then get the next Bobcat batter to hit into a double play, ending the inning with Ohio leading 2-0 after the first half inning.

Buffalo would get on the board in the bottom of the first. When Jessica Goldyn led the inning off with a single to center field. She would then steal second and then advance to third on a passed ball. With one out, Danielle Lallos would walk. Goldyn would then score on a double steal, putting Lallos at second with one out. Catrell Robertson would then reach first on a fielder’s choice, putting runners on first and second with one out. Starter Danielle Stiene (Loveland, Ohio) would then get the next two batters to four out and strike out and send the game to the second inning with the Bobcats leading 2-1.

Ohio would add on in the top of the second inning. With one out, MacKenzie Brunswick (Bellefontaine, Ohio) would reach when she singled up the middle. She would then be out at second when Taylor Saxton (Circleville, Ohio) reached on a fielder’s choice. Saxton would then move to third with Cooper reached on a fielding error by the second baseman. Then with two outs, Holland would reach on a third error by the Bulls’ shortstop, scoring Saxton and Cooper. Holland would move to third on the error. Then with Day at the plate, Holland would attempt to score on a passed ball, but would be out at home to end the inning with Ohio leading 4-1.

Buffalo would get a runner on in the bottom of the second inning when Ally Power would lead off with a single to right center. Stiene would then get the next two batters to strike out, with Power moving to second on a passed ball. Then with two outs, Stiene would get the final batter of the inning to ground out to her on the first pitch, ending the inning the Bobcats up 4-1.

Ohio would add on in the top of the third inning when Day would lead the inning off with a bunt single. She would then advance to second with Alvarez reached on an error. With no outs, Geno would single through the right side, scoring Day and Alvarez. In the process, Geno would move to second on a throw home and would then be replaced on the bases by Michaela Dorsey (Grove City, Ohio). Dorsey would then advance to third when Madison Claytor (Alpharetta, Ga.) reached on a fielder’s choice. Still with one out, the Buffalo pitcher would get the next Bobcat batter to hit into a double play, ending the inning with Ohio now leading 6-1.

Buffalo would get a run in the bottom of the third inning when Jenelle Martinez would lead off with a single and then move to second on a throwing error. Martinez would then score when Lallos would single through the right side. Then with two outs, Karlie Fernandez would walk, putting runners on first and second. Stiene would then get the last Buffalo batter to strike out, ending the inning with Ohio leading 6-2.

Buffalo would get another run in the bottom of the fourth inning, with two outs, Goldyn would reach on a ground rule double. She would then score when Martinez single to shallow centerfield. Then with two outs, Martinez would get caught trying to steal second, ending the inning with Ohio leading 6-3 going to the top of the fifth inning.

Ohio would get the run back and then some in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Michaela Dorsey (Grove City, Ohio) reached first on an error. With the runner on, Jamie Wren (Whittier, Calf.) would come to the plate and crush the first pitch she saw to left center for her first home run of the season, putting the Bobcats up 8-3. Claytor would then single to left field, however the Buffalo pitcher would get the next Ohio batter out to end the inning, sending the game to the bottom of the fifth with an 8-3 lead.

Buffalo would attempt to get a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Lallos led off with a single. She would then move to second on a hit by Bobbie Langlois. Lallos would then be thrown out at home on a single by Gabby Keller. With one out and runners one first and second, Fernandez would reach on a single, loading the bases. Stiene would then get the next Buffalo batter to strike out for the second out. With two outs, Essence Savinon would reach on a fielder’s choice, but Fernandez would be out on the play, and the game would go to the sixth inning with Ohio leading 8-3.

Ohio would try to add on in the top of the sixth inning when Saxton reached first on a fielding error. She would then be thrown out trying to steal second. Cooper would then draw a walk and then advance to second on an error. With one out, the Buffalo pitcher would get the next Ohio batter to line into a double play to end the inning to go to the bottom of the sixth with the Bobcats leading 8-3.

Buffalo would once again try and get a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when with one out, Goldyn would single and then move to second on a base hit by Martinez. Martinez would then be out at second when Lallos hit into a fielder’s choice. With runners on the corners, Stiene would get the last Buffalo batter to ground out, ending the inning with the Bobcats up 8-3.

Ohio would get a run in the top of the seventh inning when Day would lead the inning off with a triple to left center. She would then score on a sacrifice fly to right field by Alvarez, giving Ohio a 9-3 lead going to the bottom of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Stiene would send the Bulls down in order, giving Ohio the 9-3 victory.

At the plate, the Bobcats scored nine runs on eight hits and capitalized on seven Buffalo errors. Geno went 2-for-2 with four RBI and Day went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a triple. Wren had one hit, a home run and two RBI, and Claytor, Cooper and Brunswick all had hits for Ohio.

In the circle, Stiene would pitch all seven innings, allowing three runs on 12 hits. She would strike out eight and only walk two on her way to her 12th win of the season.

GAME TWO: Ohio 11, Buffalo 9
Ohio would attempt to get on the board first in the top of the first inning. With one out, Holland would reach on an infield single and then advance to second on an error by the Buffalo defense. Unfortunately, the Ohio offense would be unable to get her around and the game would go to the bottom of the first still scoreless.

After starter Desirae Villanueva (Surrey, British Columbia) had a clean bottom of the first inning, Geno would lead off the top of the second with a hard shot up the middle. Michaela Dorsey would then come into the game to run for Geno. Dorsey would then move to second when Wren reached on a single. With one out, Dorsey would be thrown out at third trying to steal. The Buffalo starter would then get the last Bobcat batter out to end the inning with the came still tied at 0-0.

Buffalo would get on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Keller would lead off with a double to right center. She would them move to third on a sacrifice bunt from Fernandez. Then with one out, Savinon would single through the left side, scoring Keller. With two outs, Buffalo would load the bases after drawing two walks, however Villanueva would get the Bulls batter to hit into a force out at third, ending the inning with UB leading 1-0.

The Bobcats would take the lead in the top of the third inning when Saxton would lead off the inning with a base hit. She would then steal second and advance to third on a throwing error. Then with one out, Holland would reach and advance to second on a fielder’s choice. Day would then come to the plate and single to right center, scoring Saxton and Holland. Day would then score when Alvarez doubled to centerfield. Still with one out, Dorsey would record her first hit of the season when she roped a single up the middle, putting runners on first and third. Wren would then come to the plate and rope a single through the left side, scoring Alvarez and Dorsey.

Ohio wasn’t done, still with one out, Claytor would demolish a double to center, scoring Wren from second. Then with two outs, Saxton would record her second infield single of the inning, placing runners at first and third. However, Saxton would be caught attempting to steal second, ending the inning, but Ohio had made a statement, going to the bottom of the frame leading 6-1.

Buffalo would get runs back in the bottom of the third inning when Lallos would lead off with a double to left center. She would then move to third on a sacrifice bunt from Alyssa Cuevas. After a walk and a hit by a pitch, the Bulls would load the bases and then score two runs on a single by Savinon. Still with one out, Charlotte Miller would clear the bases with a single and then move to third on an error by the Ohio center fielder. Villanueva would then get a batter to strike out and ground out to end the inning, sending it to the top of the fourth with Ohio still leading 6-5.

Ohio would get some of the runs back in the top of the fourth inning when Cooper would lead off the inning with a triple down the right field line. She would then score when Holland reached on a single to left field. Holland would advance to third on a double from Day. Still with no outs, Alvarez would walk to load the bases. Holland would then score when with one out, Wren reached after she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Ohio would add one more run in the inning when Alvarez scored on a sacrifice fly to left field from Claytor, giving Ohio a 9-5 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.

Buffalo would get two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Lallos would lead off with a single. She would then move to third on a base hit from Cuevas. Then with no outs, Keller would single to right center, scoring Lallos and Cuevas. The Bobcat defense would then get the next three batters out and send the game to the fifth inning with Ohio leading 9-7.

Ohio would get those runs back in the top of the fifth inning when with one out, Cooper would hit her second triple of the game, this time to deep left center. She would then score on a Holland single up the middle. Day would then draw a walk. Holland would then score on a wild pitch and a throwing error, putting Ohio up 11-7.

Buffalo would cut into the Ohio lead in the bottom of the sixth. Lallos would lead the inning off with a single and then move to second when Cuevas drew a walk. After the walk, Villanueva would be replaced in the circle by Stiene. Lallos would then score on a ground out by Keller. Cuevas would then score on an RBI double by Fernandez. With one out and a runner on second, Stiene would get the next two batters out and would go to the seventh inning with an 11-9 lead.

Ohio would try to add on in the top of the seventh inning when with one out, Cooper would double to center field. However, the offense would be unable to get her around and the Bobcats would go to the bottom of the frame with an 11-9 lead.

Stiene and the Ohio defense would come out in the bottom of the frame and send Buffalo down in order, sealing Ohio’s 11-9 lead.

In the circle, Villanueva pitched five innings, allowing nine runs on nine hits and struck out two while walking seven. Stiene would enter the game and pitch two innings, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out three.

At the plate, Ohio scored 11 runs on 16 hits. Cooper went 3-for-5 with two triples, a double and two runs scored while Holland also went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Day went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI and Wren went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Alvarez, Geno, Dorsey and Claytor all added hits for the Bobcats.
