VESTAL, N.Y. -- The Ohio wrestling team continued the 2017 season on Sunday (Nov. 12) at the Bearcat Open hosted by Binghamton University.
Ohio Top-5 Open Finishes
Junior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) took the first place spot in the 133-class to mark his first tournament win on the year. Kelly opened the competition with a win by fall over Columbia's Christopher Scorese in 1:07. In round two, the junior would record another win by fall over Harvard's Lukus Stricker in 1:37. In the quarterfinals, Kelly would post aa 15-7 major decision victory over Cornell's Noah Baughman. Kelly would then produce a 16-0 technical fall victory over Buffalo's Derek Spann to make it to the finals where he would face Vito Arujau. Kelly would earn the first-place victory in a 6-5 decision.
Redshirt freshman Mario Guillen (Perrysburg, Ohio) would finish third in the 125-class. Guillen would start competition in the second round with a 19-2 technical fall win over Binghamton's Joe Nelson. In the quarterfinals, Guillen would post an 11-7 win by decision over Brown's Donald Keeley. Guillen would then suffer a 9-2 decision loss to Cornell's Michael Russo. Guillen would move on to the third-place match and post a 10-3 decision win over Buffalo's Kyle Akins.
Notable Performances
Freshman Alec Hagan (Eureka, Ohio) would finish in sixth in the 141-class. Hagan began the day with a 10-3 decision win over Army's Taylor Brown. In the second round, Hagan would fall in a 5-4 tiebreaker against University of Virginia's Brian Courtney. Hagan would then record a 4-2 decision win over Franklin and Marshall's Brett Kulp. Hagan would then post an 18-0 technical fall victory over Brown's James Pawelski before winning by a 12-5 decision over Penn's Jake Lizak. Hagan would then be unable to compete in the match for fifth place because of the six-match rule.
Redshirt freshman Joe Terry (Pickerington, Ohio) would also finish in sixth in the 174-class. Terry would suffer a loss to Bucknell's Frank Guida who posted a win by fall in 4:28. Terry would move on to the consolation bracket posing a 7-5 decision win over Havard's Richard Martinez. Terry would go on to post a 7-4 decision win over Army's Jed Smith before posing a 7-3 decision win over Franklin and Marshall's Josh Young. Terry then posted a 12-6 decision win over Buffalo's Cameron Caldarelli. In the semi-finals, Terry recorded an 8-3 decision win over Brown's Andrew LaBrie before he was unable to compete in the fifth-place match due to the six-match rule.
UP NEXT
After Sunday's competition, Ohio will travel to Annapolis, Md. to participate in the Navy Classic on Saturday, Nov. 18. The open is set to begin at 9 a.m. ET.
