NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- After another historic day on the golf course, the Ohio women’s golf team finished the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championships in third place after shooting a 289 on Sunday for a three round total of 882 (+18). Junior Hailey Hrynewich finished the championships in third place after shooting a 67 on Sunday. Hrynewich’s 67 is the lowest round ever shot by an individual at the championships.
Overall, the Bobcats’ 289 is the second lowest single round score in program history and Ohio’s 882 is the lowest three-round total in Ohio history.
The Bobcats' third-place finish marked the program's best at the league tournament under eighth-year head coach Kelly Ovington as well as Ohio's highest finish since taking second in 2005. Ohio's 882 marked Ohio's lowest at the MAC Championships under Ovington.
The Bobcats had two golfers finish in the top-five for the first time since 1999.
Hrynewich (Muskegon, Mich.) finished the tournament in third place after shooting a 67 on Sunday. The 67 is a new career-low for Hrynewich and is the second lowest all-time in program history and the lowest ever shot at MACs. Overall, Hrynewich finished the competition with a three-round total of 214 (-2), which is the third lowest ever at MACs and the lowest by a Bobcat at the championships. Hrynewich was also named to the MAC All-Tournament Team.
Freshman Emily Hughes (Columbus, Ohio) finished the tournament tied for fourth place after shooting a 74 on Sunday, finishing the competition with a three-day total of 216 (E). Hughes’ three-round score is the fifth lowest at MACs and is tied for the second lowest three-round total in program history. Hughes was also named to the 2016 All-Tournament Team for her outstanding showing at this year’s event.
Senior Angela Codian (Massillon, Ohio) finished the weekend tied for 15th place after shooting a third round score of 71, finished the event with a tournament total of 225 (+9).
Sophomore Lily Pendy (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) finished the 2016 MAC Championships tied for 27th place after shooting a 79 on Sunday, finishing the event with a three round total of 229 (+13).
Rounding our the Bobcat golfers was senior Lauren McKinzie,(Medina, Ohio) who finished this year’s championship tied for 43rd place, after shooting a third round score of 77, finishing the event with a total of 238 (+22).
Kent State won the 2016 MAC Championships for the 18th-straight year, finishing with a three-day total of 868 (+4).
At the conclusion of the 2016 MAC Championships, McKinzie was honored as the league's Women's Golf Sportswoman of the Year, which recognizes the player whom other players most enjoy playing or conversing with; has good rapport with her own team; is supportive of her own team, but also respects the competition; makes players feel comfortable to be around her; commands respect and esteem rather than merely being popular and would consider to be worthy of representing women's intercollegiate golf to others. McKinzie is the fifth Bobcat to earn such honors, joining Candi Artz (2001, '02), Megan Weaver (2012), Sarah Tranelli (2013) and Julie Lechner (2015).
