The Ohio baseball team (16-19, 5-7 MAC) stormed back from a three-run deficit to beat Mid-American Conference East Division rival Bowling Green, 10-5, (13-23, 4-8 MAC) in the series finale of a three-game weekend set on Sunday (April 17) at Warren E. Steller Field.
Bowling Green posted a 5-4 win over the Bobcats in the weekend opener on Friday (April 15), then clinched the series with a 6-2 victory on Saturday (April 16).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Freshman first baseman Rudy Rott (Holmen, Wis.) turned in a big performance at the plate for the Bobcats, going 2-for-3 with his third home run of the season and a career-high four RBIs.
• Junior second baseman Ty Black (Waynesville, Ohio) went 2-for-4 with his first homer of the year, a walk and four runs scored.
• Senior center fielder Manny De Jesus (Caguas, Puerto Rico) tripled, walked twice, drove in two runs and scored two more.
• Junior left fielder Mitch Longo (Mayfield, Ohio) finished 2-for-4.
• Senior right-handed starting pitcher Connor Sitz (Westerville, Ohio) fanned one over three innings while allowing three earned runs on four hits and two walks.
• Junior righty Tom Colletti (Wheaton, Ill.) earned the win on the mound in relief for Ohio, striking out three while giving up two earned runs on five hits and two walks over five frames. He improved to 3-1 on the year.
• Redshirt sophomore right-handed reliever Jake Roehn (Sandwich, Ill.) struck out one and surrendered one hit in an inning of work.
• Freshman right fielder R.J. Williams accounted for four of Bowling Green's 10 hits. He doubled, hit his first home run of the year, plated three runs and scored three runs.
• Senior southpaw starting pitcher Andrew Lacinak took the loss on the hill for the Falcons, dropping to 2-5 on the season. He gave up five runs -- three of which were earned -- on four hits and two walks over five innings.
• Bowling Green struck for three runs in the home half of the first inning. Sophomore third baseman Derek Drewes and senior left fielder Matt Smith coaxed back-to-back one-out walks to set the stage for a three-run homer to right by Williams one out later.
• Ohio evened the score with a three-run top of the fifth. Black drew a leadoff walk, and redshirt junior designated hitter Nate Squires (Plain City, Ohio) followed with a base hit to left. Both scored one out later on a triple down the right field line by De Jesus. De Jesus then scored the tying run on a single to right by Rott.
• The Bobcats broke the game open with five runs in the sixth. Redshirt senior catcher Cody Gaertner (Pittsburgh, Pa.) reached on a Bowling Green fielding error to lead things off. After sophomore right fielder Tony Giannini (Carmel, Ind.) walked, Black loaded the bases when he reached on another miscue by the Falcons. Squires and junior shortstop Tyler Finkler (Olmsted Falls, Ohio) served up back-to-back sacrifice flies to plate Gaertner and Giannini, respectively. After De Jesus coaxed a walk, Rott smashed a three-run dinger to right.
• The Falcons got a run back in the bottom of the sixth as Williams reached on a one-out bunt single, advanced to third on a base hit through the right side by senior center fielder Kory Brown and then scored one out later on a single to center by redshirt junior shortstop Nick Glanzman.
• Ohio plated its ninth run in the seventh by way of Black's two-out solo shot to left.
• The Bobcats made it a five-run victory in the ninth as Black hit a one-out single through the left side and scored on a fielding error that put Finkler on base.
