THE BASICS
The Ohio baseball team (15-19, 4-7 MAC) suffered a 6-2 setback to Mid-American Conference East Division rival Bowling Green (13-22, 4-7 MAC) on Saturday (April 16) at Warren E. Steller Field.
The win clinched the weekend series for the Falcons. Bowling Green posted a 5-4 win over the Bobcats in the weekend series opener on Friday (April 15).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Bobcats lost despite outhitting the Falcons, 11-8.
• Redshirt senior catcher Cody Gaertner (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led the Ohio bats with three singles.
• Freshman first baseman Rudy Rott (Holmen, Wis.) finished 2-for-5 with a double.
• Senior center fielder Manny De Jesus (Caguas, Puerto Rico) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
• Junior right-handed starting pitcher Jake Rudnicki (Toledo, Ohio) took the loss on the mound for the Bobcats, falling to 4-1 on the season. He struck out five over six innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits and three walks.
• Redshirt sophomore right-hander Jake Roehn (Sandwich, Ill.) gave up three earned runs on two hits and a walk in one inning of relief. He tallied one strikeout.
• Redshirt sophomore southpaw reliever Gerry Salisbury (Brunswick, Ohio) tossed one scoreless inning, striking out two while giving up one hit.
• Junior first baseman Greg Basalyga homered and double, drew a walk, drove in three runs and scored two more to lead the way for the Falcons.
• Senior left fielder Matt Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for Bowling Green.
• Sophomore right-handed starting pitcher Zac Carey allowed two unearned runs on nine hits over five frames. He struck out four.
• Sophomore left-handed reliever Kody Brown earned the pitching win for the Falcons, improving to 1-1 on the year. He struck out one and gave up two hits in three innings of work.
• Junior right-handed reliever Tony Landi tossed one perfect inning of relief for Bowling Green.
• The Falcons struck first in the bottom of the first inning as Smith sent a two-out single back up the middle and scored on a double to right center by Basalyga.
• Bowling Green increased its lead to 2-0 in the second. Redshirt junior shortstop Nick Glanzman hit a two-out single to through the left side, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double down the left field line by sophomore catcher Justin Mott.
• Ohio got on the scoreboard in the top of the third. De Jesus hit a one-out single, then advanced to second on a Bowling Green fielding error and moved up to third on a base hit through the right side by Rott. De Jesus then scored on a single to center by senior third baseman John Adryan (Delran, N.J.).
• The Bobcats tied the game at two-all in the fifth as Adryan reached on an error by the Falcons with one out, moved up to second on a single to center by Gaertner, advanced to second on a fielder's choice that put junior second baseman Ty Black (Waynesville, Ohio) and then scored on an RBI base hit through the left side by sophomore right fielder Tony Giannini (Carmel, Ind.).
• Bowling Green went back in front in the sixth. Basalyga drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior center fielder Kory Brown and then scored the go-ahead run one out later on a single to right field by freshman designated hitter Logan Giddings.
• The Falcons tacked on three more insurance runs in the seventh to run the game out of reach.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
• The Bobcats recorded at least 10 hits in a game for the 18th time this season.
• Gaertner tallied his 11th multi-hit game of the year and fifth with at least three hits.
• Rott and De Jesus each posted their 13th multi-hit efforts of the season.
UP NEXT
The Bobcats take aim at closing the weekend with a win as they battle the Falcons again on Sunday (April 17) in the series finale. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m. ET. Senior right-handed pitcher Connor Sitz (Westerville, Ohio) is scheduled to make the start on the hill for Ohio. Bowling Green is set to send senior left-handed pitcher Andrew Lacinak to the mound for the start.
