UPDATED TOURNAMENT BRACKET

YPSILANTI, Mich. â€" Ohio redshirt senior Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) advanced to the championship round of the Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championship Saturday as the Bobcats sit in fourth place with 52.5 team points.

Wellington will take on Missouri’s J’Den Cox, who was the No. 1 seed at 197-pounds. Wellington owns a disqualification win over Cox from earlier this season.

En route to his appearance in the championship, Wellington picked up wins over Jackson Lewis of Central Michigan by decision, 8-4, and Kent State’s Kyle Conel, 11-5.

“We let some matches get away from us but then we came back and wrestled pretty hard,” said head coach Joel Greenlee. “Bottom line I don’t think we believed in ourselves the way we should have and that cost us. When our back was against the wall we fought back and I am proud of the guys for doing that.”

Although he lost his opening round matchup, sophomore Noah Forrider (Marysville, Ohio) rattled off two straight wins to stay alive in the tournament. Forrider beat Eastern Michigan’s Kyle Springer 6-4 in sudden victory and then beat Kent State’s Anthony Tutolo by decision, 4-3.

Redshirt senior Cody Walters’ (Macedonia, Ohio) bid to win his fourth-straight Mid-American Conference 174-pound title was derailed when he dropped a close fought match to Missouri’s Blaise Butler, 2-1. Walters shutout Kent State’s Jairod James by major decision in the quarterfinal round, 12-0.

Redshirt senior Andrew Romanchik (Independence, Ohio) advanced to the semifinals of the championships with a quick pin of Derek Hillman of Eastern Michigan in the quarterfinals. Romanchik faced Old Dominion’s Jack Dechow in the semifinal and dropped a 4-1 decision.

Redshirt senior Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) bounced back from being pinned in the opening round by Missouri’s LeRay Barnes at the 3:40 mark of the quarterfinal round to pick up a win over Old Dominion’s Devin Geoghegan by major decision 12-3.

Freshman Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) advanced to the semifinals of the tournament at 125-pounds with a quarterfinal win over Old Dominion’s Jeske Brandon by decision, 5-1. Laney faced off against Dylan Peters from Northern Iowa in the semifinals dropping a 9-5 decision.

Freshman Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) dropped his quarterfinal matchup at 133-pounds to Northern Illinois’ Austin Eicher with a late pinball at the 5:21 mark. Kelly bounced back to pick up a decision win in the consolation bracket over Missouri’s Zach Synon, 7-4.

Redshirt freshman Austin Reese (Urbana, Ohio) bounced back from a 3-2 decision loss in the opening round to Eastern Michigan’s Dakota Jarez to beat Northern Illinois’ Shaun’Qae McMurtry by major decision 11-1.

The MAC Championships wrap up on Sunday with finals beginning at 1 p.m. The matches will be streamed on ESPN3.
