• Freshman designated hitter Brady Cherry went 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI, a run scored and a walk.
• The Buckeyes struck first in the top of the first, tallying their first run on an Ohio error that brought home junior center fielder Troy Montgomery, who had reached on a leadoff walk, and a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of junior second baseman Jalen Washington that scored Bosiokovic, who had reached on a base hit to left.
• Ohio State took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-run blast to left field by Bosiokovic that scored senior shortstop Craig Nennig, who led off the frame with a single back up the middle.
• The Bobcats got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. Longo led off with a single through the right side, then moved to second on a base hit through the left side by senior third baseman John Adryan (Delran, N.J.). Freshman first baseman Rudy Rott (Holmen, Wis.) loaded the bases with Bobcats one out later with a single to right. Ohio made it a three-run game when Giannini laced a sacrifice fly to deep center field, scoring Longo from third.
• Ohio narrowed the Buckeye lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of runs. De Jesus got things rolling with a single to right, then moved up to second on a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt by junior second baseman Ty Black (Waynesville, Ohio). After Longo drew a walk, both he and De Jesus moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. One out later, redshirt senior catcher Cody Gaertner (Pittsburgh, Pa.) swung and missed at a third strike with two outs, but the pitch by Mosbarger hit the dirt and rolled to the backstop. That allowed De Jesus to score from third. The second run came via a fielding error by the Buckeyes, which permitted Longo to score from third.
• The Buckeyes answered back by tallying two more runs in the top of the ninth. Washington hit a leadoff single to center, then moved up to second base on an error on a failed pickoff attempt. He scored on a double to right by Cherry. Ohio State made it a three-run game again when Cherry advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nennig, then scored by way of a sacrifice fly to center by senior pinch hitter Ryan Leffel.
• Pavlopoulos came on to pitch in the bottom of the ninth for Ohio State and shut the door, retiring the Bobcats in order to seal the win for the Buckeyes.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
• De Jesus tallied his 10th multi-hit game of the year, tying him for the team lead.
QUOTABLE
Fourth-year coach Rob Smith on Ohio's offense
"We outhit them. We had more hits than they did on the game. Unfortunately they scored more runs than we did in that scenario. Sometimes it's not always about the quantity; it's when you get them. And, unfortunately, we had some struggles getting hits with runners in scoring position tonight. Tip your cap -- their guys made a couple of good plays, too."
