BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. â€" The Ohio wrestling team extended its win streak to seven-straight duals with victories over Cleveland State and Gardner-Webb Saturday. The ‘Cats defeated Cleveland State 31-11 and Gardner-Webb 22-13.
“This is the time of the year you need to be confident, this is the time of the year you need to go out and get after it, and score points. That’s what we did today,†said head coach Joel Greenlee. “We went out and took what we wanted.â€
With the MAC and National tournament approaching Greenlee said, “We’ll give them a couple days off in a row now. We’ll train for two or three days then take two or three days off. It’s time to get ready for post season wrestling.â€
CLEVELAND STATE
125 â€" Shakur Laney v. Nick Derosa
In the 125-pound matchup, freshman Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) earned a takedown in the opening seconds against Nick Derosa. Derosa made his way to an escape, but after another takedown, Laney was able to squeeze the pinfall with 0:33 remaining in the first period.
133 â€" Zak Hassan v. Evan Cheek
Redshirt freshman Zak Hassan (Wheaton, Ill.) was called on to fill in for freshman Cameron Kelly who was fighting illness in the dual. Hassan, who wrestled at 133-pounds against Evan Cheek, scored a takedown early in the first. Cheek retaliated with an escape and takedown to close out the period. After another escape, takedown combination by Cheek and stalling on Hassan he took an 8-2 victory.
141 â€" Noah Forrider v. Mike Carlone
Redshirt sophomore Noah Forrider (Marysville, Ohio) wrestled Mike Carlone at 141-pounds. Forrider came out firing with an inside trip off a single leg to get the quick takedown. Carlone then got the escape followed by another Forrider single leg takedown. Carlone hit a successful gramby roll to takedown combination, but Forrider was able to end the initial period with an escape. The high pace continued in the second when Forrider scored an escape and takedown, followed by a quick escape from Carlone. In the final period Forrider got an escape and takedown off a crisp ankle pick. Carlone managed a reversal in the ending seconds, but Forrider won the match 11-7.
149 â€" Cullen Cummings v. Nick Montgomery
149-pounder redshirt sophomore Cullen Cummings (Marysville, Ohio) faced Cleveland State’s Nick Montgomery. Cummings scored a takedown during a quiet first period followed by a Montgomery escape. In the second Cummings hit a switch reversal right off the whistle followed by an immediate Montgomery reversal. Both wrestlers earned one more escape each as Cummings picked up a decision win, 5-4.
157 â€" Spartak Chino v. John Vaughn
Redshirt senior Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) took on John Vaughn at 157-pounds. Chino scored right away with a knee pick, and after two mat returns by Chino, Vaughn was able to escape. Chino was able to get another knee pick takedown and end the opening period with 1:51 of riding time. Starting down in the second frame Chino hit his signature cartwheel taking Vaughn to his back in the process and scoring four near fall points. Vaughn then escaped, but Chino took him to his back again after a duck under takedown, adding six more points. Chino earned the 20-5 technical fall after adding two more takedowns in the third.
165 â€" Austin Reese v. Nathan Wynkoop
Redshirt freshman Austin Reese (Urbana, Ohio) picked up a shutout over Nathan Wynkoop at 165-pounds. Reese scored a takedown in the opening seconds of the match. He then threw in a gruesome bar and half on Wynkoop for four near fall points. In the second Reese scored off a reversal and rode out Wynkoop for the entire period. Reese ended the dual after another takedown, winning by major decision 13-0.
174 â€" Cody Walters v. Gabe Stark
Redshirt senior Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) picked up a win via forfeit. Last year against Cleveland State, Walters won by disqualification after the Cleveland State wrestler executed an illegal mat return.
184 â€" Andrew Romanchik v. Xavier Dye
Redshirt senior Andrew Romanchik (Independence, Ohio) picked up a major decision over Xavier Dye. Romanchik worked is a way to a takedown in the opening period and then found his way to four near fall points. In the second, Romanchik ran out of an escape followed by a takedown. He ended the match with two more takedowns to capture a 14-1 major decision.
197 â€" Phil Wellington v. Sam Wheeler
Redshirt senior Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) was downed by a slight decision against Cleveland State’s Sam Wheeler. Wheeler was able to take down Wellington in the first period and Wellington followed with an escape. In the second, Wellington escaped and got in on a takedown attempt but wasn’t able to finish the takedown. The third period, ended even after one takedown by Wellington and two escapes from Wheeler. In overtime, Wheeler scored a takedown beating Wellington 6-4.
285 â€" Jesse Webb v. Riley Shaw
In the final match of the first dual, sophomore Jesse Webb (Bennington, Vt.) dropped a technical fall to Cleveland State heavyweight Riley Shaw. Shaw lifted Webb to a takedown and scored eight points off of two four-point near fall turns. In the second, Shaw scored five more points from two takedowns and an escape. Webb was able to earn one escape. Shaw ended the match in the third scoring a takedown, which led to a 17- 1 technical fall.

125 â€" Shakur Laney v. Cortez Starkes
Coming off his pin earlier on the day, Laney took multiple shot attempts in the first, but was unsuccessful to score off them. Starkes started off in the down position in the second and was able to escape after Laney tried dropping to a leg. Laney then took him down and rode Starkes out for the rest of the period. After a quick escape in the third Laney went on to take the decision 4-3.
133 â€" Zak Hassan v. Tyler Ziegler
The 133 pound match started off the bat with a scramble but neither wrestler was able to score. In the second, Hassan earned an escape, but Ziegler drove the rest of the match earning two takedowns and an escape to win 5-1.
141 â€" Noah Forrider v. Ryan Hull
Forrider hit a double leg takedown immediately off the whistle. Hull then got an escape, but Forrider took him down again. In the second, Hull escaped again, but was also taken down again, which sent Hull to injury time. Forrider restarted the match in the down position and pushed the pace on his way to a 15-5 major decision victory.
149 â€" Cullen Cummings v. Chris Vassar
Cummings got himself in multiple scramble situations but also ended the first period scoreless. Into the second Vassar attempted a tilt, but Cummings escaped. During the third Vassar earned an escape, which sent the match to overtime where Vassar was able to get a takedown and win 3-1.
157 â€" Spartak Chino v. Ryan Mosely
In his second match of the day Chino started it with a vicious duck under takedown, but Mosely slid himself into reversal, which Chino quickly escaped from. In the next two periods each wrestler earned an escape, sending Chino to a 4-3 decision victory.
165 â€" Austin Reese v. Austin Trott
This match started off scoreless in the initial period. Reese took neutral in the second which again ended scoreless. During the third period Trott tilted Reese for a four point near fall and earned one point of riding time to win 5-0.
174 â€" Cody Walters v. Brett Stein
After winning the opening match of the day, Walters came out a bit slow during his only competition. Stein grabbed a takedown after Walters tried to flip out. Walters then escaped. In the second, Walters got in on a single leg and rolled his way to a takedown. In the third Walters got an escape quickly and followed it up with a takedown. Stein was able to escape, but Walters picked up the victory 6-3.
184 â€" Andrew Romanchik v. Hunter Gamble
Romanchik’s match also was scoreless to start. Going into the second, Romanchik snuck out the back for a reversal, and continued to keep him flat for the entire period. He also tacked on another takedown and one more point for riding time to capture a 5-0 decision for the Bobcats.
197 â€" Phil Wellington v. Gray Jones
Wellington wrestled right off the whistle and scored on a takedown. Wellington proceeded to roll Jones over a two on one, and pinned him with 0:47 left in the first period, avenging his loss to Cleveland State earlier.
285 â€" Jesse Webb v. Boyce Cornwell
Webb struggled to find points against Gardner-Webb heavyweight Boyce Cornwell. Cornwell scored three takedowns, an escape and a point for riding time to pick up an 8-0 victory over Webb.
