HUNTINGTON, W. Va. â Ohio track & field kicked off the 2016-17 indoor season at the Marshall Opener Thursday (Dec. 1) where they fell to the Thundering Herd 83.5-44.5.
In the first event of the evening, Olivia Mayfield (Beachwood, Ohio) picked up a second-place finish in the long jump reaching 5.25m behind Marshallâs Lauren George at 5.35m. Abby Lawrence (Athens, Ohio) placed fourth for the âCats reaching 4.93m.
Emma Ryan (Vincent, Ohio), Cassidy Cleland (Reedsville, Ohio) and Gaza Odunaiya (Athens, Ohio) placed first through third in the weight throw event reaching 16.35m, 15.73m and 15.58m lengths, respectively.
Taylor Smith (Canal Winchester, Ohio) recorded a first-place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.71m to score five points for the âCats. Avery Kerns (Galena, Ohio) also scored for Ohio reaching 1.66m and taking third place.
Junior Jordan Porter (South Point, Ohio) wrapped up the field events with a finishing second in the shot put with a throw of 14.06m to earn three points.
In the 400-meter dash, Marissa Handel (Highland Heights) and Emily Deering (Geneva, Ohio) led for the Bobcats placing third with a 59.31 time and fifth with a 1:00.00 time.
Ohioâs top two scorers in the 60-meter dash were Thelma Agyekum (Delaware, Ohio) and Kelsey Luebbe (Centerville, Ohio). Agyekum finished in fourth crossing with an 8.07 time while Luebbe recorded an 8.23 finish to take fifth.
Mya Hodge (Dublin, Ohio) and Mackenzie Rankin (Louisville, Ohio) finished in sixth and seventh in the 60-meter hurdles. Hodge completed the race in 9.30 just ahead of Rankin in at 9.74.
In the 600-meter run, Ohio placed third and fourth with Keilah Causey (Gahanna, Ohio) and Rankin coming in at 1:45.89 and 1:47.30.
Ohio secured second through fourth place in the 800-meter run with Kaitlyn Logan (Granville, Ohio), Rebekah Markovitz (Columbia, Maryland) and Jennifer Fockler (Canton, Ohio) clocking in at 2:25.56, 2:26.85 and 2:32.84.
The Bobcats in the 200-meter dash were led by Agyekum and Hodge who finished fourth and fifth with times of 27.01 and 27.35 seconds.
The Opener concluded with a second-place finish in the 4x400m relay with Gracie Huffman (Pleasant Hill, Ohio), Erin Stewart (Chardon, Ohio), Handel and Causey finishing in 4:11.25.
The Bobcats will now prepare for their first event of the New Year where they will return to compete at the Doug Raymond Invitational hosted by Kent State on Jan. 14, 2017.
