MORGANTOWN, W.V. â€" The Ohio wrestling team opened the 2016-17 season at the Mountaineer Quad going 1-2 as a team with a win over West Virginia and falling to Pittsburgh and Campbell.
The Bobcats beat West Virginia by a team score of 25-11, with the losses coming to Campbell by a team score of 23-15 and Pittsburgh by a team score of 21-16. Ohio won 17 of the 30 duals at the meet.
Sophomore 125-pounder Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) swept both of his matches on the day defeating Pittsburgh’s Lorenzo Bentley by decision (4-3) and West Virginia’s Devin Brown by major decision (13-5).
Redshirt sophomore Hayden Lee was defeated in his match at the Quad.
At 133-pounds, sophomore Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) went 1-2 on the day with his lone win coming by decision (6-5) against Cory Stainbrook of West Virginia
In the 141-pound division, RS junior Noah Forrider (Maryville, Ohio) swept all three of his matches by decision. His wins came over Nick Zanetta of Pittsburgh (4-3), Campbell’s Joshua Heil (6-3) and an overtime win over West Virginia’s Tony Deangelo (4-2).
Bobcat’s RS junior Cullen Cummings (Woodridge, Ill.) wrestles at the 149-pound division and fell in all three of his matches on the day.
Ohio went 2-1 at the 157-pound division at the quad. Redshirt freshman Kade Kowalski took a 2-1 decision over West Virginia’s Dayton Barrett (Nashport, Ohio) and senior Zack Wilson (Bluffton, Ohio) obtained his first victory of the season by decision (5-2) over Austin Kaisser of Campbell.
At 165-pounds, RS sophomore Austin Reese (Urbana, Ohio) went 1-2 in his matches defeating Campbell’s Quinten Perez by decision (5-1).
Junior Arsen Ashughyan (Armenia) swept each of his three matches taking down Pittsburgh’s Christian Dietrich (5-3), Campbell’s Alex Herringshaw (8-4), and West Virginia’s Ty Millward (5-1)
Ohio’s 184-pounder freshman Hunter Yeargen (Willard, Ohio) went 1-2 in competition winning his Ohio debut against Matt Carr of Pittsburgh by decision (10-8).
RS freshman Bailey Faust (Lexington, Ohio) swept all three of his matches in his Bobcat debut, including a major decision over Zach Bruce of Pittsburgh (14-0), a decision over Campbell’s Willie Bivens (11-5) and a forfeit against West Virginia.
Heavyweight redshirt sophomore Zach Parker (Felton, Del.) went 1-2 in the competition earning a decision win over West Virginia’s Bryson Begley (5-2).
Ohio returns to action at the Bearcat Open tournament on next Sunday (Nov.13).
