ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio Women’s soccer team (3-9-1, 1-5 MAC) posted a 4-1 victory over Mid-American Conference foe Akron (3-9-2, 0-4-2 MAC) on a fall Sunday afternoon at Chessa Field.

“I think it’s been a long time coming this MAC season,” head coach Aaron Rodgers said. “We’ve put in performances in a few games this season in conference that I think deserved a better result than we got. Thursday night at Buffalo was very tough for us, I felt like we did everything to deserve a result there, but the girls put that behind them and I think that fueled them today. I think they feel great about themselves, which they should, and they thoroughly deserved to score four goals today and get the win.”

Ohio would strike first late in the first half to take a 1-0 lead in the 33^rd minute on a goal by Allie Curry (Fairfield, Ohio) after an overhead pass from Alexis Milesky (Plain City, Ohio) to Curry who put the ball to the left side of the keeper and into the back of the net. The goal would mark as Curry’s third on the season.

The Bobcats would then earn a penalty kick on an Akron infraction to increase Ohio’s lead to 2-0 in the 37^th minute on a shot from Megan Niebuhr (Cincinnati, Ohio), her second this season.

Akron would respond soon after on a Chloe Allen solo dribble from the midfield to put the ball to the right of Taylor Smith (Uniontown, Ohio) and make it a 2-1 game to end the half.

In the first half, the Bobcats would record eight shots with five of them on goal. Alivia Milesky (Plain City, Ohio) would lead the team in shots with two and one shot on goal. Celeste Fushimi-Karns (Dublin, Ohio), Alexis Milesky, Mollie Whitacre (Perrysburg, Ohio), Niebuhr, Madelyn Kah (Hamilton, Ohio) and Curry would all add one shot each to Ohio’s shot total.

In goal for the Bobcats, Smith would grab two saves while allowing one goal in the first half.

The second half would remain scoreless until the 67^th minute when freshman Sydney Leckie (Medina, Ohio) would net a goal on an overhead pass from Alivia Milesky that she would shoot to the left side of the keeper to put Ohio up 3-1. Leckie’s goal would mark as her second goal on the season.

“That was a huge win for us,” Leckie said. “We have been very close in all of our games and I just think it took that first goal and it was really exciting and really relieving because we’ve been so close every game and then for it to finally pay off, I think we’re just going to keep going up from here.”

The Bobcats would increase their lead over the Zips late in the second half in the 83^rd minute when Bryce Hueber (Cincinnati, Ohio) would take a shot off a rebounded shot from Curry into the net to the lower right post to give Ohio a 4-1 victory.

“I think we played the entire 90 minutes,” Leckie said. “We didn’t just play a half of the game we put everything out on the field and everyone played for each other.”

Overall, Ohio tallied 18 shots and 10 shots on goal while Akron registered just five shots and five shots on goal. The Bobcats recorded nine corner kicks on the game compared to the Zip’s zero.

Alivia Milesky led the way for Ohio recording three shots and one shot on goal. Curry and Kah would both add two shots and two shots on goal for Ohio while Hannah Jaggers (Taylorsville, Ky.), Megan Niebuhr (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Alexis Milesky would each add two shots. Fushimi-Karns, Remi Eades (New Albany, Ohio), Whitacre, Leckie and Hueber each added a single shot for the Bobcats’ shot total.

In goal, Smith would record four saves while allowing one goal in her 90 minutes of work.

“Akron was a team that was kind of in a similar position with us with their results in their first five games,” Rodgers said. “We knew that they were going to come out and pose some problems for us, so it was important to get up on top and get a second goal early because that’s kind of been our downfall because we’ve given up two goals and today we were able to turn the tables so it feels good to follow through with that.”

Up next, Ohio will travel to Ypsilanti, Mich. to battle with the Eagles of Eastern Michigan to continue the Mid-American Conference schedule on Friday, Oct. 14. First kick is set for 4 p.m.
