ATHENS, Ohio â€" Ohio swimming and diving fell to the Eagles of Eastern Michigan 178-122 on Saturday (Oct. 29) at the Ohio University Aquatics Center.
“We knew today was going to be tough,†head coach Rachel Komisarv-Baugh said. “We came in and attacked each race and never stopped fighting, and I’m really proud of them for that. We’ve made a lot of progress since the last time that we swam against Eastern and I think that all of our hard work is showing.â€
In the first event of the afternoon, the Bobcats opened with a third place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Laura Dawson (Newcastle Upon Tyne, Eng.), Emilia Lahtinen (Ylogarvi, Finland), Carrie Dukes (Monkton, Md.) and Corrin Van Lanen (Green Bay, Wis.) finished the race in 1:45.50.
In the 1,000-yard freestyle, Ohio stole first and second place with freshman Mikayla Herich (Hebron, Ky.) and Ana Henderson (Danville, Calif.) leading the way. Herich finished in first place at 10:10.75, while Henderson finished the race in 10:12.66 and in second place.
Kelsey Hahn (Oviedo, Fla.) finished the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:53.75 time to take second place. Following, Dawson placed second in the 100-yard backstroke after finishing 56.82 seconds and Lahtinen finished the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.43 to also take second place.
Ohio swept the podium in the 200-yard butterfly with junior Elena Patz (Waunakee, Wis.), freshman Annie Gosselin (Naperville, Ill.) and sophomore Emily Davis (Lexington, Ky.) taking first through third place. Patz finished in 2:05.07, Gosselin in 2:06.00 and Davis in 2:06.79.
The seventh event, Van Lanen won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.28 seconds with freshman Emily Zimcosky (Smock, Pa.) on her tail and finishing in second place at 23.80 seconds.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Van Lanen won with Zimcosky again, trailing just behind. Van Lanen finished with a time of 51.29 seconds and Zimcosky at 51.99 seconds.
Dawson recorded a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:01.29; just 0.20 seconds behind EMU’s Alexis Mitcheltree.
Sophomore Mackenzie Hornstra (Naperville, Ill.) finished in second place in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:21.91 time with Lahtinen in fourth at 2:22.62.
Herich and Henderson dominated the 12th event of the afternoon by placing first and second in the 500-yard freestyle with times of 4:59.19 and 5:00.85, respectively.
Dukes clocked a time of 57.09 in the 100-yard butterfly to take second place with Patz touching in fourth with a 58.15 second finish. Following, in the 200-yard IM, Herich would take second place with a time of 2:08.04.
In the final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, consisting of Van Lanen, Dawson, Zimcosky and Herich as the anchor, the Bobcats picked up a second-place finish with a time of 3:29.74.
In the 1-meter dive, sophomores Olivia Dillon (Newcastle, Aus.) and Nicole Hughes (Cleveland, Ohio) placed fourth and fifth scoring 257.18 and 223.50, respectively. Later, in the 3-meter dive, Dillon and Hughes placed third and fifth with 233.18 and 208.20 points, respectively.
The Bobcats travel to Oxford, Ohio to take on MAC foe, Miami, next Saturday (Nov.5) beginning at 1 p.m.
