ATHENS, Ohio â€" The Ohio swimming and diving team opened the 2016-17 regular season with a 158-79 victory over in-state rival Youngstown State on Saturday (Oct. 22) at the Ohio Aquatics Center.
“With the training that we’ve been doing for the last 6-7 weeks, I thought they would be a lot more tired. They came out, raced hard, and swam fast,†head coach Rachel Komisarz-Baugh said. “I was very pleasantly surprised by their drive to come out and swim fast.â€
The meet kicked off with the 400-yard medley relay, with the squad of senior Laura Dawson (Newcastle Upon Tyne, England), freshman Mikayla Herich (Hebron, Ky.), sophomore Corrin Van Lanen (Green Bay, Wis.) and freshman Emily Zimcosky (Smock, Pa.) finishing in first place with a final time of 3:50.81.
The second Ohio relay consisting of junior Caroline Raley (Mobile, Ala.), freshman Emilia Lahtinen (Ylojarvi, Finland), senior Carrie Dukes (Monkton, Md.) and freshman Claire Mikesell (Clearfield, Pa.) finished next with a time of 3:55.72 followed by the third relay of Bobcats with freshman Annie Gosselin (Naperville, Ill.), sophomore Mackenzie Hornstra (Naperville, Ill.), junior Elena Patz (Waunakee, Wis.) and junior Katie Lemen (Carmel, Ind.) finishing third with a 4:00.55 time.
In the 1,000-yard freestyle, sophomore Ana Henderson finished first with a time of 10:26.64 followed by freshman Kelsey Hahn in second place at 10:48.44.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Herich finished in first place with a time of 1:52.27 and Dawson just behind in second with a 1:55.22 finish. Freshman Mackenzie Caruthers (Hilliard, Ohio) rounded out the final Bobcat score with a fourth-place finish and a 2:00.22 time.
Raley finished the 100-yard backstroke in first at 58.55 and Lemen in second at 1:00.52.
Lahtinen won the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:05.73 time. Next in was senior Hannah Shinn (Waterloo, Ill.) at 1:06.88 and in second place and Hornstra in third at 1:07.67.
Gosselin and Patz stole first and second place in the 200-yard butterfly by finishing in 2:04.83 and 2:07.29, respectively. Sophomore Emily Davis (Lexington, Ky.) was next to touch for the Bobcats in fourth place and 2:08.40.
In the 50-yard freestyle, the Bobcats won first through fourth place with Van Lanen finishing at 23.50, Zimcosky at 24.20, Dukes at 25.03 and sophomore Lexie White (Waxhaw, N.C.) at 25.11.
The 100-yard freestyle ended with Van Lanen in first place with a 51.88 time. Zimcosky and Lemen followed shortly after in second and third place with times of 52.12 and 54.71, respectively.
Dawson finished the 200-yard backstroke first for the Bobcats with a 2:02.63 time. Raley was next in at third place and in 2:08.34.
In the 11th event of the afternoon, the 200-yard breaststroke, the Bobcats won first through third place with Hornstra in first at 2:24.30, Lahtinen in second at 2:24.93 and sophomore Emily Ortner (Concord, Calif.) in third at 2:27.96.
In the 500-yard freestyle, the Bobcats prevailed again with Herich in the lead and finishing in 4:58.01. Next in was Henderson in second at 5:07.58 and Hahn in third at 5:14.83.
Dukes picked up a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.18 followed by Dawson in second at 57.21 and Patz in third at 59.27.
In diving, sophomore Olivia Dillon (Newcastle, Australia) took fourth place in the 1-meter dive with a score of 262.13.
The Bobcats are back at home next Saturday (Oct. 29) versus Eastern Michigan. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m. ET in the Ohio Aquatic Center.
