AKRON, Ohio
â€" After 87 minutes of scoreless action, the Ohio women’s soccer team dropped a hard fought Mid-American Conference battle to Akron on Sunday (Sept. 27) afternoon, falling by the final of 2-0.

Freshman Stephanie Rowland (Pewee Valley, Ky.) recorded the first shot for Ohio (3-6-0, 1-1 MAC) in the third minute.

In total, the Bobcats had four shots and two corner kicks on the first half, which ended with the score tied 0-0.

Ohio and Akron (4-5-1, 1-1 MAC) continued to battle in the second half, with the first goal of the game coming in the 87th minute when Akron’s Sarah Sivic put the ball into the left side of the goal, putting the Zips up 1-0.

The Zips added another goal in the 89th minute when Ariadna Ramos scored when the ball went off the left post into the goal, giving Akron the 2-0 victory.

“Give credit to Akron, they had a tough loss on Friday night to Kent State and they came out and were willing to fight,” head coach Aaron Rodgers said. “We were a little bit flat today, but I think this whole process of having a young team and going through the experience will teach us what is required of us on Sundays in conference play. It’s always tough and it’s always a grind. We were just a half step short today. “

Overall, the Bobcats registered five shots. Sophomore Allie Curry (Fairfield, Ohio) led the way with two of them, while sophomores Hannah Jaggers (Taylorsville, Ky.) and Megan Niebuhr (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Rowland each had one.

In goal, freshman Taylor Smith (Uniontown, Ohio) allowed two goals in her 90 minutes of action, snagging 10 saves.

The Bobcats return to action on Friday Oct. 2 when they take on Northern Illinois at 4 p.m. at Chessa Field. Ohio will then take on Western Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. inside Chessa Field.
