Toledo came away with an 11-2 win in the series opener on Friday (May 1). Ohio retaliated with a 7-4 win on Saturday (May 2) to even the series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two squads combined for 30 hits, utilized a combined 11 pitchers and combined to leave 26 runners on base.
- Redshirt senior Garrett Black (Lima, Ohio) led the Bobcats at the plate with a 4-for-7 effort that included a double and an RBI.
- Senior Tyler Wells (Lexington, Ky.) went 2-for-7 with his team-leading fifth home run of the 2015 season.
- Sophomore Mitch Longo (Mayfield, Ohio) finished 2-for-6 with a double, a walk and an RBI.
- Junior Manny De Jesus (Caguas, P.R.) went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored while redshirt junior Cody Gaertner (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished 2-for-5 with two walks.
- The loss spoiled a strong start by sophomore right-hander Jake Rudnicki (Toledo, Ohio), who scattered five hits over 6.1 frames, allowing one unearned run and three walks. He fanned four.
- Sophomore right-handed reliever Tom Colletti (Wheaton, Ill.) put up a valiant effort out of the bullpen, striking out five over 6.2 innings. He gave up three runs -- two of which were earned -- on nine hits. He suffered the pitching loss to fall to 3-2 on the year.
- Junior John Martillotta and freshman Dalton Bollinger each posted three hits, an RBI and two runs scored to lead Toledo at the plate. Martillota tallied two doubles while Bollinger recorded another.
- Freshman A.J. Montoya, junior Ryan Callahan and senior Nate Langhals each collected two hits for the Rockets. Montoya doubled, Langals drove in a run and Callahan scored another.
- Senior right-handed pitcher Alec Schmenk threw one scoreless inning of relief and earned the mound triumph for Toledo, improving to 2-2 on the season. He walked two.
- Freshman right-handed reliver Kyle Rago picked up his first save of the season for the Rockets, giving up one earned run on two hits in one inning. He fanned one.
- The Bobcats landed the first punch in the bottom of the first inning. De Jesus drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double down the left field line by Garrett Black to give Ohio the early 1-0 lead.
- Ohio tacked on a second run in the bottom of the third as redshirt senior Kyle Dean (Athens, Ohio) drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by De Jesus, advanced to third on a base hit to right by Garrett Black and scored on a double down the left field line by Longo.
- Toledo cut Ohio's lead to one run in the top of the seventh as Bollinger sent a leadoff double to left and scored one out later on a single to center by Callahan and a fielding error by De Jesus.
- The Rockets jumped out in front of the Bobcats, 3-2, thanks to a two-run eighth inning. Junior Deion Tansel was hit by a pitch with two outs, then stole second. He scored the tying run on a double down the left field line by Martillottta. A single to right by Bollinger scored Martillotta and gave Toledo the lead.
- The Bobcats answered the challenge in the home half of the eighth as senior Jake Madsen (Cincinnati, Ohio) blasted a leadoff solo home run over the right field wall, tying the game up at three-all. Madsen extended his program all-time hits record to 272 career base knocks. It marked his second round-tripper of the season.
- The bottom of the ninth inning saw De Jesus leg out an infield single and Garrett Black single to left to put two on with two outs, but Ohio was unable to capitalize.
- In the bottom of the 14th inning, redshirt sophomore pinch hitter Nate Squires (Plain City, Ohio) drew a leadoff walk and was then replaced on the bases by sophomore pinch runner Tyler Finkler (Olmstead Falls, Ohio). Finkler advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by De Jesus, then moved up to third on a fly out to center by Garrett Black. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, Finkler and the winning run were left stranded on third.
- Toledo plated three runs in the top of the 15th to take a 6-3 lead. Martillotta and Bollinger sent back-to-back singles through the left side to lead off the frame. One out later, Callahan singled through the left side to load the bases. Langhals was hit by a pitch to bump home Martillotta and give the Rockets the go-ahead run. Bollinger scored on an RBI fielder's choice that put junior Lucas Sokol on, and Montoya scored Toledo's sixth run on a throwing error by Ohio sophomore Ty Black (Waynesville, Ohio) on the same play.
- Wells sent a two-out solo home run over the wall in left center to cut Toledo's lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the 15th, but that's as close as the Bobcats got.
