ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio softball team dropped a battle to Akron on Saturday evening, falling 3-2 at the Ohio Softball Field.
Akron (23-24, 8-10 MAC) got on the board first in the top of the second inning when Chelsea Wildey scored on an RBI base hit by Savannah Fruin to take an early 1-0 lead.
Ohio (15-29, 7-10 MAC) quickly responded in the top of the third. The scoring began when Casie Hutchinson (Lebanon, Ohio) led off the inning with a double to the rightfield wall, and would later score on an RBI single by Madison Claytor (Alpharetta, Ga.) to tie the game at 1-1.
The Zips re-took the lead in the top of the fourth inning when Taryn Allmon scored on a sacrifice fly by McKenzi Rhodes to give Akron a 2-1 lead. Akron added on another in the top of the sixth inning to go up 3-1.
The Bobcats mounted a comeback bid in the bottom of the seventh inning when Raven King (Alpine, Utah) smashed a homerun to centerfield to bring the score within one. However, that was all the Bobcats would get and Ohio would fall by the final of 3-2.
At the plate, the Bobcats had six hits, led by Amanda Dalton (Salem, Va.) who was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases. Claytor had a base hit, while Sloan Walker (Cypress, Texas) had a single and an RBI. Hutchinson added a double and King added a homerun and an RBI.
In the circle, Lauren McClary (Pasadena, Texas) got the start, pitching five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out two. Sydney Compston (Wellston, Ohio) came in relief, pitched two innings and allowed one run on three hits and struck out one.
The Bobcats conclude the regular season tomorrow afternoon when they wrap up the two-game series with Akron. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Ohio Softball Field. Be sure to arrive early, as the Bobcats will be honoring their six seniors in a pregame ceremony for their annual Senior Day.
