THE BASICS
The Ohio baseball team (26-15, 11-7 MAC) couldn't overcome a five-run third inning and four errors, dropping the opening game of its weekend series against Mid-American Conference West Division foe Toledo (19-27, 11-8 MAC), 11-2, on Friday (May 1) at Bob Wren Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Tyler Wells (Lexington, Ky.) went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI to lead Ohio at the plate.
- Junior right-handed starting pitcher Jake Miller (Westerville, Ohio) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bobcats, falling to 2-3 on the season. He allowed five earned runs on five hits and a walk while recording one strikeout in three innings of work.
- Toledo senior right-handed starting pitcher Cameron Palmer tossed eight innings of five-hit ball, allowing two runs -- one of which was earned -- and giving up three walks. He struck out three.
- Junior John Martillotta went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored for the Rockets.
- Senior Nate Langhals finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a walk for Toledo.
- Junior Deion Tansel went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and three runs scored for the Rockets.
- Toledo took advantage of four Ohio defensive miscues, seven walks and three hit batsmen.
- Ohio opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second as junior catcher Cody Gaertner (Pittsburgh, Pa.) reached on a fielding error at first base by Toledo freshman Dalton Bollinger, advanced to second on a wild pitch, found himself on third via a ground out by junior John Adryan (Delran, N.J) and then scored from third on an RBI ground out to second by Wells.
- The Rockets put five runs on the board in the top of the third to seize control of the contest. Junior Lucas Sokol was hit by a pitch with one out, then stole second. Freshman A.J. Montoya drew a walk, and, one outer, Toledo loaded the bases when Tansel was hit by a pitch. The Rockets then used four consecutive two-out hits by Martillotta, Bollinger, sophomore Corey Tipton and sophomore Jacob Britt to take a 5-1 advantage.
- Toledo tacked on three more in the top of the fifth to increase its lead to 8-1. Tansel, Tipton and Britt all drew walks to load the bases with Rockets with two outs. A two-out, two-run single by Langhals plated Tansel and Tipton. Toledo tacked on another run as Britt scored on a throwing error at short by Ohio redshirt senior Garrett Black (Lima, Ohio).
-The Bobcats got a run back in the bottom of the seventh as Wells, who reached on a one-out single to right, scored on a wild pitch.
- Toledo scored three in the top of the eighth to put the contest out of reach. Freshman Matt Hansen reached on a fielding error at short by Black with one out, then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a single through the right side by Tansel. After Tansel moved to second on a passed ball, Martillotta doubled him home with a drive to center. Bollinger then reached on a throwing error at third by Adryan that allowed Martillotta to advance to third. Martillotta then tagged up from third and scored the game's final run on a sacrifice fly to right by Tipton.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Junior Manny De Jesus (Caguas, P.R.) has a team-high 11-game hitting streak going.
- Adryan has reached base safely in 10 straight games.

QUOTABLE
Third-Year Coach Rob Smith:
"We had one of these (games) a couple weeks ago against Bowling Green. We're coming off of finals this week, so maybe it's that. But, it was a bad game. It's baseball. It's a game that can sometimes get away from you. We just have to hit the reset button and come back tomorrow and go to work."

UP NEXT
Ohio looks to even the weekend series with Toledo on Saturday (May 2). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Bob Wren Stadium. Junior right-hander Connor Sitz (Westerville, Ohio) is slated to start on the hill for Ohio and oppose Toledo sophomore southpaw Steven Calhoun.
