TOLEDO, OHIO -- Behind the pitching of Mikayla Cooper, the Ohio softball team split a doubleheader at Toledo Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats dropped game one 4-3 and defeated the Rockets 3-2 in eight innings in the second game of the twin bill.
Ohio struck first in the top of the third inning. Cooper (Delaware, Ohio) led off the inning with a base hit and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amanda Dalton (Salem, Va.). She then advanced to third on a base hit through the right side by Timmie Rappe (Wheaton, Ill.). Copper would the score when Kaylin Clarke (North Royalton, Ohio) smoked an 0-2 pitch to the rightfield wall, to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats added on in the top of the fourth inning when Madison Claytor (Alpharetta, Ga.) reached second on an error by the right fielder. She would then advance to third on a sacrifice bunt by Adrienne Gebele (Annapolis, M.D.) and then score on a wild pitch to put Ohio up 2-0.
Ohio added an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning when Rappe led off with a double to the rightfield wall. She then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Clarke and then scored on an RBI single up the middle by Casie Hutchinson (Lebanon, Ohio) to give the Bobcats a 3-0 advantage.
Toledo rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning, highlighted by Ashley Maynard's two-RBI single to push the Rockets to a 4-3 lead and victory.
At the plate, the Bobcats had six hits, led by Cooper who went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Rappe went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, and Clarke and Hutchinson each had one hit and a run batted in.
In the circle, Lauren McClary (Pasadena, Texas) got the start, pitching five and two-thirds innings and allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out four. Cooper entered the game in the bottom of the sixth, getting her only batter faced to ground out.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Toledo broke through when Allissa Turkovich scored from third on a scoring error by the catcher, to put the Rockets up 1-0.
The Bobcats wasted no time in responding in the top of the sixth inning when lead off batter, Dakota Pyles (Galloway, Ohio) smashed a solo homerun to leftfield, tying the game up at 1-1.
The Bobcats bats busted out in the top of the eighth inning, when Dalton and Rappe both reached base on singles. Both runners then executed a double steal, and with a full count, Gebele smoked the ball through the right side, scoring both base runners, putting Ohio up 3-1.
Toledo mounted a rally in the bottom of the frame. Nichole Tovan made the score 3-2 when she hit a one out homerun to leftfield. Then with runners on second and third and one out, Cooper got Samantha Showalter to ground into a 6-3-4 double play to end the game, and give the Bobcats the 3-2 eight-inning victory.
At the plate, the Bobcats had seven hits. Rappe led the squad, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Gebele was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, Pyles went 1-for-4 with a homerun a run scored and one RBI. Dalton added a base hit and a run scored, while Raven King (Alpine, Utah) and Claytor each added a hit.
In the circle, Cooper led the way, pitching eight innings and the complete game, and allowing two runs on six hits and striking out two.
The Bobcats return to action Tuesday, April 21 when they travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on Ohio State in a doubleheader. Game one us set for 5 p.m. with game two to follow at 7 p.m.
