CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Ohio softball team wrapped up play at the Carolina Classic on Sunday afternoon by splitting a double-header. In game one against Charlotte, the Bobcats fell 11-3 in five innings but quickly rebounded, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson in the second game, 10-7.
In the first game against Charlotte (10-7), the 49ers got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Chelsea Lisikatos singled in the first run of the game to give Charlotte the 1-0 lead. The 49ers added on another run on the bottom of the third inning when Haley Pace hit a solo homerun to rightfield, putting Charlotte up 2-0.
The Bobcats cut the Charlotte lead in half in the top of the fourth when Mikayla Cooper (Delaware, Ohio) hit a solo homerun to leftfield, making the score 2-1.
Charlotte got the run back in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring three runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Hayley Lewis to put the 49ers up 5-1.
Ohio responded in the top of the fifth inning. The inning began when Sloan Walker (Cypress, Texas) singled and Amanda Dalton (Salem, Va.) walked to put runners on first and second and helping set up Casie Hutchinson's (Lebanon, Ohio) two-RBI double to left center, and cutting the Charlotte lead to 5-3.
However, the 49er offense would not quiet down and in the bottom of the fifth, Charlotte broke the game open, scoring six runs on three hits and coming away with the 11-3 five-inning victory.
At the plate, the Bobcats had five hits. Walker went 2-for-3. Hutchinson went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, Dakota Pyles (Galloway, Ohio) registered a hit and Cooper had a homerun and an RBI. Dalton and Adrienne Gebele (Annapolis, M.D.) both reached base by walking.
In the circle, Lauren McClary (Pasadena, Texas) pitched four innings, allowing eight runs on four hits and struck out three. Sydney Compston (Wellston, Ohio) pitched a perfect third of an inning, and Leanna Bachman (Carroll, Ohio) allowed three runs on three hits.
In the second game of the double-header, the Bobcats faced Fairleigh Dickinson (0-3). The Bobcats jumped on the board in the top of the second inning when Pyles doubled to rightfield, scoring Gebele to put Ohio up 1-0.
The Knights responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs when Madelaine Wilen hit a three-run homerun to center, putting Fairlegh Dickinson up 3-1.
The Bobcats cut into the lead in the top of the third when Dalton scored on a groundout to second by Hutchinson to cut the score to 3-2.
After a scoreless fourth, Ohio broke the game open in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs, highlighted by a two-RBI singled up the middle by Hutchinson that scored Dalton and Timmie Rappe (Wheaton, Ill.). The next batter, Kaylin Clarke (North Royalton, Ohio), would rope a double to center, scoring Hutchinson. Later in the inning, Raven King (Alpine, Utah) would single home Clarke, putting Ohio on top, 7-3.
Ohio would add three more runs in the top of the sixth inning when Dalton and Rappe would score again, this time thanks to a two-run single to leftfield by Gebele. That then set up King to have her third hit of the day by hitting an RBI double to give the Bobcats a 10-3 lead.
The Knights would respond in the bottom of the frame, putting a three spot on the board and cutting the Ohio lea to 10-6.
The Bobcats would get a run back in the top of the seventh when Dalton hit an RBI single up the middle to put Ohio up 11-6.
Fairleigh Dickinson would add one run in the bottom of the seventh, but would end the game when Nicole Bellini struck out swinging with two runners on, and giving Ohio the 11-7 victory.
At the plate, the Bobcats had 16 hits. Dalton went 4-of-5 with three runs score, an RBI and a stolen base. King went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in. Pyles and Rappe each registered two hits and Gebele added two RBIs for the Bobcats.
In the circle, Clarke pitched seven innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and struck out two.
Next, the Bobcats (5-12) head to Lexington, Ky. on March 14-15, to take on the Kentucky Wildcats for the first time since the 2014 NCAA Regionals.
