DAYTON, Ohio - The Ohio softball team dropped a mid-week doubleheader to Wright State on Tuesday afternoon at the WSU Softball Field. The Bobcats dropped game one 20-3 in five innings and fell 7-2 in the second game of the twin bill.
In the first game of the afternoon doubleheader, the Bobcats jumped on the board right away, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Sloan Walker (Cypress, Texas) opened the game with a single up the middle and Amanda Dalton (Salem, Va.) followed up with a single down the leftfield line. Later in the inning, Walker would score when Raven King (Alpine, Utah) reached on a fielder's choice, with Adrienne Gebele roping a double to left center, scoring Dalton and King and putting Ohio up 3-0.
Wright State (4-17) would respond immediately, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and taking a 9-3 lead. The Raiders would then add two more runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up 11-3.
After a scoreless third inning, Wright State would go to work offensively again in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring nine and taking a 20-3 lead, which would be the final score.
At the plate, Ohio had four hits, a double by Gebele and singles by Walker, Dalton and Dakota Pyles (Galloway, Ohio). Pyles and Kaylin Clarke (North Royalton, Ohio) also reached base by each drawing a walk.
In the circle, Clarke pitched one inning, allowing 11 runs on six hits. Sydney Compton (Wellston, Ohio) worked three innings, allowing nine runs on nine hits and striking out two.
In the second game of the twin bill, the Raiders got on the board first, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Wright State would add on in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 6-0 lead and then go up 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
The Bobcats would get on the board in the top of the sixth inning. The inning started when Gebele walked to lead off the inning and then King would reach on a fielder's choice. King would later score on a Casie Hutchinson (Lebanon, Ohio) RBI double to center, cutting the Raider lead to 7-1. Later in the inning, Hutchinson would score on a sacrifice fly by Clarke to make the score 7-2. Unfortunately, the Bobcats ran out of offensive frames and would fall by the 7-2 final.
Offensively, the Bobcats had six hits, led by Hutchinson who went 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and a run scored. Walker and Gebele both added a hit while Clarke had a hit and an RBI.
In the circle, Lauren McClary (Pasadena, Texas) pitched three and a thirds innings, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out four. Leanna Bachman (Carroll, Ohio) pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up three runs on three hits, and Mikayla Cooper (Delaware, Ohio) pitched two innings, allowing two hits and striking out out two.
Up next, the Bobcats (5-17) head to Huntington, W. Va. to take on Marshall on Thursday, March 19 in a doubleheader. Game one is set for 2 p.m. with the second game to follow at 4 p.m.
