ATHENS, Ohio â€" A pin by junior Kagan Squire (Wadsworth, Ohio) solidified a Bobcat victory against Mid-American Conference rivals Northern Iowa on Friday night as the Ohio wrestling team (8-5, 3-4 MAC) defeated the Panthers, 20-18, in the Convocation Center.
 
Redshirt junior Tywan Claxton (South Euclod, Ohio) posted the first triumph of the evening with an 8-3 decision against Northern Iowa’s Tyler Patten at the 149-class. With the win, Claxton improves his MAC record to 5-3 and overall record to 24-3.
 
The Bobcats dropped bouts at the 157 and 165 weight classes, turning the lead to the Panthers heading into the 174-class.
 
No. 8 Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) knotted the match with a 3-0 decision against UNI’s Curt Maas to remain undefeated in MAC competition. The win is the redshirt junior’s 19th consecutive victory, improving his overall record to 25-1.
 
Back-to-back Ohio major decisions followed, with redshirt junior Andrew Romanchik (Independence, Ohio) posting a 10-2 major decision against Cody Caldwell at the 184-class. The win is Romanchik’s fourth-consecutive, improving his record to 6-2 in MAC competition and 24-9 overall.
 
No. 16 Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) recorded his eighth-consecutive win with a 10-0 major decision at the 197-class. With the victory, the redshirt junior remains undefeated in MAC competition while improving his overall record to 20-5.
 
A major decision by Northern Iowa at the heavyweight class allowed the Panthers to close the gap on the Bobcats. Northern Iowa grappler No. 6 Dylan Peters forced a tech. fall at the 125 to return the lead to UNI.
 
Squire returned the lead to the Bobcats, recording a pin in 4:05 at the 133-class that put the victory out of reach for the Panthers. The win marks Squire’s first time back onto the mat since Jan. 10 and improves his overall record to 12-7.
 
Northern Iowa claimed the 141-class with an 11-6 decision, setting the final score at Ohio 20, UNI 18.

Ohio will travel to Morgantown, WV. to take on the West Virginia University wrestling team on Sunday, Feb. 15 beginning at 1 p.m.
