CLEVELAND, Ohio â€" A pin by No. 11 Tywan Claxton (South Euclid, Ohio) at the 149-class captured the lead for Ohio as the Bobcats defeated the Cleveland State Vikings, 25-15, in the season’s final dual match on Sunday evening at Woodling Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio.
Gardner-Webb was originally scheduled to compete in duals against both Cleveland State and Ohio, but cancelled due to inclement weather. The match between the two Ohio teams was then relocated to CSU’s home facility.
No. 9 Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) recorded his 21st consecutive win with a fall over Gabe Stark at the 174-class. With the win, the redshirt junior improves his record to 27-1 and heads into the Mid-American Conference tournament undefeated in conference competition.
Following a CSU win at the 184-class, No. 17 Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) posted a 16-5 major decision over Nick Corba, earning his 10th consecutive win. The redshirt junior also heads into the MAC tournament undefeated in conference duals and holds a 21-5 overall record.
Cleveland State earned major decisions at the heavyweight and 125-class, taking the lead over Ohio.
The Bobcats reclaimed the lead at the 133-class, with a 3-1 decision win by Josh Parrett (Kettering, Ohio). The triumph marks the freshman’s first duel win of the season, improving his overall record to 13-9.
The teams traded bouts at the 141 and 149-class, with No. 11 Tywan Claxton (South Euclid, Ohio) pinning CSU’s Nick Montgomery in 2:33 to reclaim the Ohio lead. The redshirt junior improves his overall record to 25-3 with the win.
Redshirt junior Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) extended the Bobcat’s lead with a 3-1 decision at the 157-class, improving his overall record to 16-10.
Redshirt senior No. 25 Harrison Hightower (Strongsville, Ohio) earned a 7-0 decision in his final duel for Ohio, extending his overall record to 22-9 and solidifying the Bobcat victory.
