ATHENS, Ohio â€" Despite claiming five bouts, the Ohio wrestling team (8-6, 4-4 MAC) fell to the West Virginia Mountaineers (8-8), 19-16, on Sunday afternoon in the WVU Coliseum.
West Virginia took an early lead at the 141-class, with No. 16 Mike Morales recording a tech. fall in 5:19.
Ohio responded, posting four consecutive wins to reclaim the lead. Cullen Cummings (Woodridge, Ill.) earned a 4-1 decision, improving his record to 10-6. This is the redshirt freshman first time on the mat since Dec. 21, and first duel appearance of the season.
Redshirt junior Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) recorded a 7-3 decision at the 157-class, improving his overall record to 15-10.
A 3-0 decision by Harrison Hightower (Strongsville, Ohio) followed, improving the redshirt senior’s overall record to 20-9.
No. 9 Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) picked up bonus points for Ohio, recording a 10-0 major-decision against WVU’s Parker VonEgidy. This marks the redshirt junior’s 20th consecutive win, improving his team-high overall record to 26-1.
Following a Mountaineer triumph at the 184-class, No. 17 Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) recorded a 4-2 decision to extend the Bobcat lead. This marks the redshirt junior’s ninth-consecutive win, improving his overall record to 20-5.
West Virginia closed in on the Ohio lead, recording a decision at the heavyweight class and a major decision at the 125-class.
An 8-0 major decision by WVU’s Cory Stainbrook at the 133-class allowed the Mountaineers to return from behind to win the match, 19-16.

The Ohio wrestling team will close out duel competition in Boiling Springs, N.C., as they take on Cleveland State and Gardner-Webb beginning at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
