OXFORD, Ohio â€" The Ohio women’s soccer team continued Mid-American Conference play on Friday (Oct. 9) evening, falling to Miami, 1-0.
“We’re making progress,†head coach Aaron Rodgers said. “We just went into Miami, who is now in second or now first place in the league, and we competed toe-to-toe with them. We’re making a lot of progress. The last two years Miami out played us, and this year we were right there with them. We were just a little bit short. I thought our backline played well. I thought they were brave to play the ball out of the back when we could have went the easy route and cleared it and hope we’d win the ball up the field. But we decided we wanted to play out and that takes some bravery. I give them credit for doing that.â€
The Bobcats (4-8-0, 2-3-0 MAC) started off firing early, with Megan Niebuhr (Cincinnati, Ohio) registering the first shot of the game in the fifth minute off a blocked header. A minute later, Alexis Milesky (Plain City, Ohio) got the second shot that sailed wide of the goal.
However, Miami (8-4-0, 4-1-0 MAC) would get the first goal on the board in the 35th minute when Korie Sauder put the ball into the right side of the net, allowing the RedHawks to take a 1-0 lead into the half
In the first half, Ohio registered five shots, one of them on goal, while the RedHawks registered four shots, with two of them on goal. Carly Manso (Vernon Hills, Ill.) led the team in the first half with three shots, one of them on goal.
In the second half, Hannah Jaggers (Taylorsville, Ky.) added a shot for Ohio in the 62nd minute and Milesky added another one in the 83rd minute.
The Bobcat defense held Miami scoreless in the second half, however the RedHawks would come away with the 1-0 win.
Overall, Ohio had seven shots, two of them on goal. Leading the Bobcats was Manso with three shots with one on goal and Milesky had two shots with one of them on goal. Jaggers and Niebuhr each added on shot.
Taylor Smith (Uniontown, Ohio) started in goal for the Bobcats, allowing one goal on 10 shots faced, all while registering four saves in her 90 minutes of action.
“Could we have played better? I think we could have,†Rodgers said. “That says a lot about our team. If we were not our best today and it took Miami’s best at home to beat us, then I feel that is a lot of progress. But, we’re not satisfied with losing.â€
The Bobcats return to action Sunday, Oct. 11 when they head to Muncie, Ind. to take on Ball State. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
