ATHENS, Ohioâ€" The Ohio Women’s soccer team dropped a 3-0 battle to Mid-American Conference foe Western Michigan at Chessa Field on Sunday afternoon. The competition marked Ohio’s annual Pink Game to pay tribute to Breast Cancer Awareness month.

“It’s still great to play for something bigger than yourself,” said junior midfielder, Alexis Milesky. “It’s always fun to go out there and have a chip on your shoulder to work for. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t get the result we wanted, but that doesn’t take away from the cause that we were playing for.”

In the first half, the Broncos (6-3-2, 2-2 MAC) scored early in the fifth minute on an unassisted shot from the front of the net to the left of the keeper to give Western Michigan an early 1-0 lead. Late in the first, on a shot from the front of the net to the upper right corner of the goal, the Broncos netted another goal in the 42nd minute to give them the 2-0 lead over Ohio entering the second half.

The Bobcats (4-7-0, 2-2 MAC) put up a fight offensively registering four shots, with one shot on goal while Western Michigan registered three shots in the half, all of which were on goal.

In the second half, the Broncos added to their lead with an unassisted goal in the 67th minute on a shot from inside the box to the left of the keeper that would earn them the 3-0 win.

In goal for Ohio, freshman Taylor Smith (Uniontown, Ohio) started for the Bobcats, recording one save and allowing two goals in the first half. To start the second half, sophomore keeper Vanessa Cordoba would record one save while allowing one goal.

“We have to figure out a way to come out and be a little stronger on Sunday,” head coach Aaron Rodgers said. “Coming off of a great win for us Friday night, we need to re-group and I think I need to prepare us a little bit better mentally. Western Michigan is a top team in our league and they showed their efficiency on finishing their chances when they had them.”

Ohio registered seven shots overall with two shots on goal, while the Broncos recorded eight shots for the game, five of which were on goal. Carly Manso (Vernon Hills, Ill.), Stephanie Rowland (Pewee Valley, Ky.), and Holly Harris (Bativa, Ohio) each added two shots for Ohio while Mandy Arnzen (Edgewood, Ky.) added one.

“We’ve shown resilience all season, I think we’re very talented and we’ve got a lot of good things going on,” said Rodgers. “I look forward to a good game against Miami which is a school rivalry game, but for us it is just another MAC game that we need to win.”

The Bobcats continue MAC play on the road next weekend when they play at Miami on Friday (Oct. 9) at 4 p.m., and Ball State on Sunday (Oct. 11) at 2 p.m.
