KENT, Ohio â€" The Ohio women’s soccer team wrapped up the regular season on Thursday (Oct. 29), falling to Kent State, 1-0.
“I thought we fought really hard and obviously we needed to win to have the best chance to get into the MAC Tournament, but credit to Kent State,†head coach Aaron Rodgers said. “They are very good at home. They haven’t lost a game at home all year so it’s a difficult place to play. They’re a good team. I don’t know where they will end up finishing in the league, but they are a top team.â€
The Bobcats (5-13-0, 3-8-0 MAC) and Golden Flashes (11-6-2, 7-4-0 MAC) finished the first half scoreless.
Ohio registered five shots, two of them on goal. Redshirt junior Carly Manso (Vernon Hills, Ill.) led the team in shots with two and one of them on goal. Junior Natalie Estes (Zionsville, Ind.) registered one shot with one of them on goal. Sophomore Hannah Jaggers (Taylorsville, Ky.) and freshman Stephanie Rowland (Pewee Valley, Ky.) each registered one shot.
Freshman keeper Taylor Smith (Uniontown, Ohio) recorded six saves.
In the first half, Kent State registered 14 shots, with six of them on goal.
The Bobcats entered the second half fighting, however Kent State would break the tie in the 60th minute when Jenna Hellstrom would score to give the Flashes a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats battled through the remaining 30 minutes of play, creating a number of chances, however it would not be enough and they would fall by the final of 1-0.
Overall, Ohio registered 12 shots with three of them on goal. Manso finished the game with four shots, one of them on goal to lead the Bobcats. Jaggers finished with three shots, Estes recorded two shots with one on goal and Rowland, Junior Mollie Whitacre (Perrysburg, Ohio) and redshirt junior Holly Harris (Batavia, Ohio) all finished with one shot.
Smith finished the game with 10 saves on 11 shots on goal faced, allowing one goal in 90 minutes of action.
“I want to tip my hat to the four seniors who have done a wonderful job the three seasons that I’ve been here,†Rodgers said. “I really respect all the dedication and effort that they’ve given to this program. Their impact to this program will be with Ohio soccer for years to come.â€
