Short Story: The Ohio field hockey team (8-7, 3-2 MAC) could not overcome an early two-goal deficit, falling to Mid-American Conference archrival Kent State (6-8, 4-1 MAC), 2-1, on Friday (Oct. 23) at Murphy-Mellis Field in Kent, Ohio.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The loss snapped a three-match winning streak for Ohio.
• Kent State held the edge in shots, 15-13, but the Bobcats led the way in penalty corners, 5-2.
• The Golden Flashes grabbed a quick 1-0 lead with a goal in the second minute as senior Caroline Corthouts took a pass from the right from junior Madison Thompson and fired a shot straight on the net. Corthouts tallied her fourth goal of the year while Thompson logged her second assist.
• Kent State extended its lead to 2-1 five minutes later. Redshirt sophomore Alison Harmatz fired a shot off a pass from the right from sophomore Eilidh Thomson to notch her fourth goal of the season. Thomson's helper was her first of the year.
• Ohio controlled play in the final 35 minutes of action, holding the edge in both shots (8-6) and penalty corners (4-0).

QUOTABLE
"Very disappointing day for us. I thought, overall, we did a decent job. Unfortunately, when you give a team a two-goal lead, it's very hard to fight back into the game. Both halves, the last 15 minutes or so, I felt we outplayed them and really started to get going. We were just slow at the start of each half and not playing as efficiently and as well as we needed to." - 11th-year head coach Neil Macmillan on loss

"Good credit goes to the team, because they made some changes on the fly, managed to change our style a little bit to suit what we needed to do. I think that was a very good part of our game today and ended up creating a lot of chances in the second half, and, unfortunately, not finishing. It wasn't quite there today." - Macmillan on adjustments allowing team to stay in the match despite early two-goal deficit

"Really excited to finish as tough as we did. We scored one with a couple of minutes left and then had chances after that as well to make the score level but couldn't quite get to the point of putting the ball into the back of the net. Second half, we did extremely well to hold them to six shots and zero corners and create more chances for us. I thought that was very good defensive play in the second half and really found our way a little with moving the ball forward as well in the second half." - Macmillan on team's second-half success

"Kent's overall tactical arrangement is a fairly simple one, fairly direct down the line. We did a decent job stopping that late first half onward. Unfortunately, it was that that cost us early on and gave them a couple goals, and that's a shame because that was something we had spoken about and watched on film. The ball didn't quite go to the stick when we stepped up and needed to make a play on it. Overall, really pleased with the effort we finished with. I thought the team played really well as the game wore on. We were certainly the better team toward the end, but it all comes down to finishing, and we didn't do the best of job of putting the ball into the back of the net. " - Macmillan on team's game plan against Kent State
