ATHENS, Ohio â€" On three in seven minutes from Alexis Milesky, Allie Curry and Holly Harris, and another goal later in the first half from Natalie Estes, the Ohio women's soccer team secured a 4-2 victory over Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon at Chessa Field.
Ohio (5-10-0, 3-5 MAC) recorded 22 total shot attempts compared to 13 by the Falcons (6-9-1, 2-6 MAC). The Bobcats also earned five corners on the game.
“This team has been resilient all year,†head coach Aaron Rodgers said. “We have always found a way to get a result after some disappointment. The way we battled today and the way we styed committed to each other was what great teams do. This has been such a great team to coach and I look forward to working hard this week and preparing for another big game Friday against Toledo.â€
Early in the first half, junior forward Milesky (Plain City, Ohio) scored a header off a corner kick from junior midfielder Mollie Whitacre (Perrysburg, Ohio) in the eighth minute to give Ohio the early lead.
Milesky’s goal marks as her 14th career goal, which is tied for eighth in the Ohio record book.
“We said if we’re going to reach our goals for the season, then what we did on Friday is not going to cut it,†said Milesky. “We re-grouped and talked about it and moved on. Essentially, we have to get these wins so I think the fact that we need these wins to reach our goal kind of got us to today.â€
Shortly after in the 11th minute, sophomore midfielder Curry (Fairfield, Ohio) scored a header from a pass from redshirt junior Harris (Batavia, Ohio) to put the Bobcats up 2-0 over the Falcons. Curry’s goal marks as her first of the season.
“I definitely had a rough start to the season, but I’ve been trying to be a team player and keep the team up,†Curry said. “I’m glad I got the start today and I’m really excited I got a goal.â€
In the 14th minute Harris dribbled in to the left side of the box, drawing the keeper out of the net for another Ohio goal. To finish the half in the 37th minute, junior midfielder Estes (Zionsville, Ohio) scored the fourth goal of the half for the Bobcats on a shot off a rebound to the left of the keeper to give Ohio the 4-0 lead going into the half.
The second half was scoreless until the 85th minute when Bowling Green’s Kara Ross scored an unassisted goal on a shot into an open net from the left side to shorten Ohio’s lead to 4-1.
At the close of the second half, the Falcons’ Madison Schupbach netted a goal on a header off of a corner kick in the 89th minute and solidifying the final score at 4-2.
In goal, freshman Taylor Smith (Uniontown, Ohio) recorded seven saves and allowed two goals in her 90 minutes of work.
Overall, Ohio had 22 shots, with 11 of them on goal. Leading the Bobcats was Estes with four shots, followed Rianna Reese (Liberty Township, Ohio) and Milesky both with three. Redshirt junior midfielder Carly Manso (Vernon Hills, Ill.), sophomore midfielder Hannah Jaggers (Taylorsville, Ky.) and Curry each added two. Celeste Fushimi-Karns (Dublin, Ohio), Mandy Arnzen (Edgewood, Ky.), Whitacre, Harris, Leah Sandercock (Strongsville, Ohio), and Megan Niebuhr (Cincinnati, Ohio) each added one to Ohio’s shot total.
Ohio will continue Mid-American Conference competition Friday, Oct. 23 at Toledo then the Bobcats will return home for Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 25 for the last home game of the season to host Central Michigan. Kick off is set for 3 p.m. on Friday in Toledo, Ohio and 1 p.m. on Sunday in Athens, Ohio.
