The Short Story: In front of a packed crowd on a picturesque Saturday afternoon on homecoming weekend, Ohio (5-1, 2-0 MAC) forced four turnovers and held Miami (1-5, 0-2 MAC) out of the endzone in a 27-3 victory on Saturday (Oct. 10) at Peden Stadium.
HOW WE GOT HERE:
- Ohio opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run by senior running back Daz Patterson at the 10:14 mark of the first quarter. It marked the second straight week and fourth time this season Ohio has scored on their opening drive.
- The Bobcats limited the RedHawks to 35 yards in the first quarter.
- Ohio added to its lead when redshirt senior quarterback Derrius Vick completed a six-yard slant over the middle for a touchdown with 9:43 left in the second quarter.
- Miami found its way onto the scoreboard with a 34-yard field goal by kicker Kaleb Patterson at the 6:30 mark of the second quarter.
- Ohio closed the half with a 50-yard field goal by redshirt senior kicker Josiah Yazdani to give the Bobcats a 17-3 advantage at the half.
- The Bobcats outgained Miami 267-106 in the first half.
- Vick was 17-of-26 for 206 yards and one touchdown in the opening half.
- Sebastian Smith led all receivers in the first half with 77 yards on 7 receptions.
- On the second play of the third quarter, redshirt sophomore linebacker Quentin Poling intercepted a pass and brought it back 25 yards for a touchdown.
- After gaining possession on an interception by redshirt senior linebacker Jovon Johnson, Yazdani booted through his second field goal of the day, this time from 41 yards out as the Bobcats led 27-3 with 10:33 left in the third quarter.
- Ohio recorded four interceptions on the afternoon.
- The Bobcats added another score with 1:33 left in the game as redshirt freshman Maleek Irons punched the ball in from one yard out.
- For the game, Ohio outgained Miami 428-253.
- Ohio outrushed Miami 150-87.
- Vick finished the game going 21-for-33 for 243 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
- Smith grabbed nine receptions for 91 yards to lead all receivers.
BIG PLAYS:
- Patterson broke a multitude of tackles on a third and 10 from the Ohio 11 yard line for an 18-yard gain to keep Ohio's opening drive alive.
- Redshirt freshman running back Papi White took made a defender miss and scampered up the sidelines for a 36-yard gain later in the possession.
- After gains of 13 and 16 yards on receptions by Smith, Ohio culminated their first drive with a two-yard run up the middle to give the Bobcats an early lead.
- Later in the first quarter, redshirt senior cornerback Ian Wells notched his second interception of the season, snatching a ball thrown short by Miami quarterback Billy Bohl, who was hit by multiple Bobcat defenders while in the act of throwing.
- White took a screen pass from Vick 39 yards to bring the Bobcats to the Miami six yard line early in the second quarter.
- The following play, Vick connected with Smith, who held on to the ball despite a blow to the head, for the score from six yards out.
- On Miami's first play from scrimmage in the second half, Poling intercepted Bahl and threw off a tackler, allowing him to follow his blockers into the endzone for the touchdown.
- Johnson intercepted Bahl on Miami's next position, returning the ball 43 yards to the RedHawk 26 yard line.
- Freshman cornerback recorded his first interception as a Bobcat, hauling in a pass by Bahl in the endzone.
- Ohio ran on every single play of its final scoring drive, which was culminated on a bruising run up the gut by Irons.
