Athens, Ohio â€" Despite a fighting effort in the final weight classes, the Ohio wrestling team (4-3, 0-2 MAC) fell to the Central Michigan Chippewas (3-4, 3-0), 19-14, in their second Mid-American Conference duel of the season on Saturday evening in the Ohio University Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio.
The Chippewas swept through the first four weight classes beginning at 125, taking an early 16-0 lead against the Bobcats.
Redshirt junior Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) responded for the Bobcats at the 157-class, earning a 3-1 sudden victory decision against Malcolm Martin. With the win, Chino improved his overall record to 12-6.
A 1-0 decision-victory by No. 20 Harrison Hightower (Strongsville, Ohio) followed. This was the redshirt senior’s sixth-consecutive win, improving his overall record to 17-6.
Redshirt junior No. 11 Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) continued the momentum for Ohio with a 3-0 decision against Jordan Ellingwood. With his 14th consecutive win, Walters increases his record to 20-1, a team-high.
The Bobcats followed with another triumph at 187, where Andrew Romanchik (Independence, Ohio) posted a 3-1 sudden victory decision over the Chippewas, improving his overall record to19-8 and duel record to 3-1.
Redshirt junior Phil Wellington (South Euclid, Ohio) improved his duel record to 6-1 with an 8-3 decision victory. The win allowed the Bobcats to close in on Central Michigan, bringing the score to 16-14 heading into the heavyweight class.
Chippewa junior Adam Robinson earned a 3-2 decision against Ohio freshmen Zach Parker (Felton, DE) in the heavyweight class, solidifying the Central Michigan victory, 19-14.
