HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Senior Alexandria Basquez (Elk Grove, Calif.) blasted a two-out solo home run to straightaway center field in the top of the seventh inning to push the Ohio University softball team (26-19) to a 4-3 victory over rival Marshall (21-28) in game one of a Battle For The Bell doubleheader at Dot Hicks Field.
Basquez led the Bobcats at the plate with two hits, marking her 11th multi-hit game of the 2014 season, which is tied for third-most on the team.
Ohio broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when freshman Madison Claytor (Alpharetta, Ga.) reached on a Marshall error with one out and senior Erin Lashley (Pickerington, Ohio), who entered the contest to pinch run for Claytor, scored one out later on another Marshall error that put senior Alyssa Wolfe (Junction City, Ohio) on.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth. Freshman Casie Hutchinson (Lebanon, Ohio) coaxed a one-out walk and was replaced on the base path by sophomore Sloan Walker (Cypress, Texas). Basquez followed with a base hit through the right side, and she and Walker each moved into scoring position on the throw. After junior Timmie Rappe (Wheaton, Ill.) entered to pinch run for Basquez, sophomore Savannah Jo Dorsey (Grove City, Ohio) stroked a two-out, two RBI double to center.
The Thundering Herd retaliated with two runs in the home half of the fifth, then plated the tying run in the sixth, but Basquez delivered the knockout blow in the seventh with her seventh round tripper of the season.
Dorsey, who tossed two perfect frames of relief, picked up the pitching victory to improve to 19-13 on the season. She fanned one to increase her season total to 203, which is three shy of breaking the program's single-season standard set by junior Lauren McClary (Pasadena, Texas) in 2012. McClary started in the circle for Ohio in game one of the twin bill, recording three strikeouts over five innings of work.
