ATHENS, Ohio - Freshman Casie Hutchinson (Lebanon, Ohio) belted her first career grand slam while sophomore pitcher Savannah Jo Dorsey (Grove City, Ohio) twirled a shutout as the Ohio University softball team (20-17, 5-2 MAC) blanked Toledo (14-24, 5-4 MAC), 6-0, in game one of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader on Friday (April 11) at the Ohio Softball Field.
The Bobcats posted their second straight league victory.
Hutchinson's grand slam also marked her first career home run. The rookie drove in a career-high five runs.
Dorsey tossed seven frames of six-hit ball, striking out eight to improve to 15-12 on the season.
The Bobcats shattered a scoreless tie in the home half of the fifth inning. Senior Alyssa Wolfe (Junction City, Ohio) got things started by legging out a one-out single, then stealing second base. Sophomore Amanda Dalton (Salem, Va.) and freshman Taylor Saxton (Circleville, Ohio) followed by coaxing back-to-back walks. That set the table for Hutchinson's bases-loaded round tripper. Dorsey helped herself out by adding some insurance with a solo shot over the wall in left center one out later to make it 5-0 in favor of Ohio.
Ohio added one final run to its total in the ensuing frame. Freshman Madison Claytor (Alpharetta, Ga.) sent a leadoff single through the left side, then was lifted in favor of sophomore pinch runner Sloan Walker (Cypress, Texas), who stole second. Walker was joined on the bases by Dalton and Saxton, who reached by way of infield singles two outs later. Hutchinson capitalized on the bases-loaded opportunity, drawing a walk to bump home Walker and pick up her fifth RBI.
