LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior pitcher Lauren McClary (Pasadena, Texas) struck out a season-high 10 batters, and junior Adrienne Gebele (Annapolis, Md.) posted her eighth multi-hit game of the 2014 season, but the Ohio University softball team (13-10) fell to UMass (2-5), 4-3, on Saturday (March 8) in the Red and Black Classic at Ulmer Stadium.

McClary went the distance and gave up just five hits.

Ohio took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Gebele smacked a one-out single to left and scored on a double to left center by freshman Madison Claytor (Alpharetta, Ga.).

The Bobcats extended their advantage to three runs in the ensuing frame. Sophomore Alexia Cortez (Beaufort, S.C.) reached on an error to lead off the inning and scored on another UMass error that allowed senior Alexandria Basquez (Elk Grove, Calif.) to reach safely. Gebele followed with a base hit back up the middle, and Claytor was hit by a pitch to fill the bases with `Cats. That set the stage for sophomore Savannah Jo Dorsey (Grove City, Ohio) to deliver a single though the left side that plated Basquez.

Unfortunately for Ohio, UMass tallied its first run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to two runs, then scored three more in the bottom of the fifth to take control.

Ohio closes its Saturday slate at the Red and Black Classic by squaring off against host Louisville at 5 p.m. ET.
