BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior captain Ethan Newton went 3-for-5 with an RBI, but it was not enough as the Ohio University baseball team (22-19; 11-5 MAC) dropped a 4-3 decision to Bowling Green Friday afternoon at Steller Field.

Newton (Norfolk, Va.) also scored a run and stole a base to tie Marc Sims (1991-94) for the all-time career lead. Freshman Tyler Wells (Lexington, Ky.) also picked up three hits and scored a run.

Senior Brent Choban (Rittman, Ohio) suffered the loss after he worked 8.0 innings to post his third complete game of the year. The Ohio lefty struck out eight and gave up four earned runs. He also scattered 11 hits and walked three as he took his first loss since March 23 at Toledo.

"Brent (Choban) gave us a great shot to win today," said head coach Joe Carbone. "He really pitched a full game today and did a great job."

Bowling Green starter Matt Malewitz picked up the win after he went 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits. The Falcons utilized four pitchers with Nick Bruns earning the save.

The Falcons took the early lead as they plated one run in the bottom half of the first. BGSU would then extend its lead to 4-0 as it scored a pair of runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Ohio fought back with three runs on four hits in the seventh. Senior rightfielder Jensen Painter (Willshire, Ohio) had the key hit in the frame as he singled into left field to drive in Wells and Newton from second and third, respectively. Painter's hit came with two outs. Ohio came into today's game batting .300 as a team with two-outs.

Painter's RBI single extended his on-base streak to 41 games. Painter has got on base in every game this season.

The Bobcats were unable to score for the remainder of the game as Bowling Green went on to secure the win. Ohio outhit Bowling Green 12-11, but left 11 runners on base.

"We hit the ball hard and our guys really played hard today," Carbone said. "I liked our effort, we just came up a little short."

Ohio and Bowling Green return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. Ohio senior Jason Moulton will take on BGSU's Ethan McKenney.
