Box Score
CHARLESTON, S.C. â€" Due to inclement weather in the Charleston area, Ohio Softball was only able to play one of its two scheduled games on Sunday. The Bobcats were defeated by Longwood 14-4 before having their second game postponed until Monday at 3 p.m.
The Lancers were able to get by the Bobcats in their first scheduled game of the day, winning by a final count of 14-4. Longwood’s bats were hot during this contest, belting out 13 hits to score their 14 runs. Ohio received some strong defensive play from both Alexis Joseph and Timmie Rappe (Wheaton, Ill.), as each of these Bobcats registered four putouts in the contest.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first inning before the Lancers opened the scoring by plating two runs in both the top of the second and third innings to take an early 4-0 lead. Ohio answered back immediately, scoring two of its own in the bottom of the third inning to pull within two. With one out, Jillian Van Wagnen (Lorain, Ohio) singled to third on a bunt and then stole second. The senior was then driven home when Joseph (Alvin, Texas) singled through the left side. On the next play, Joseph was able to score Ohio’s second run of the afternoon.
Longwood had a strong fourth inning, scoring four runs in the top of the frame. The Lancers started their rally when Brittney Latka doubled to left center and Courtney Long followed this up with a single through the left side to drive in a run. With two outs, Megan Baltzell singled to left center to drive in another run and eventually came around to score. Longwood then added one more in the inning when Casey Lifsey was hit by a pitch and her advancement to first drove Brooke Short home.
The Bobcats answered once more in the bottom of the inning, adding two runs to shrink the deficit. Tessa Bailey (Acworth, Ga.) scored when teammate Jenna Giusti (Danville, Calif.) stole second. Giusti was then driven in by an Alexandria Basquez (Elk Grove, Calif.) single up the middle.
The Lancers were able to take control of the game in the fifth and sixth innings, adding six more runs to put it out of reach.
