ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University wrestling team (2-4; 1-3 MAC) was defeated 23-9 by No. 16 Kent State (9-4; 2-0 MAC) Friday night at the Convocation Center.
Ohio hung tough with the nationally-ranked Golden Flashes as it claimed victories in two of the first five matches of the evening and trailed by just three points (9-6). Kent State responded by winning four of the final five bouts to secure the victory.
Seniors Darrin Boing (Northfield Center, Ohio) and Nick Purdue (Genoa, Ohio) as well as sophomore Jeremy Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio) highlighted individual competition for the Bobcats as were victorious at 141, 174 and heavyweight respectively.
Johnson picked up the first win on the night as he defeated Brendan Barlow for the first time in his career by the count of 2-0. With the win Johnson remained undefeated in duel competition and picked up his team-best 23rd victory on the year.
Purdue also remained perfect in duel competition following a 3-1 triumph over Brandon Johnson. Boing victory over Tyler Small marked just the seventh loss all season for the Kent State sophomore, who entered the bout ranked No. 9 in three national polls and No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference.
Ohio returns to action on Sunday as it welcomes Bloomsburg (12-4) to the Convocation Center. The match is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
