ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio Field Hockey scored its most goals in a season opener since 1981 and rolled over St. Francis (PA) on Friday afternoon, 7-0. Sophomore Jessica Jue tallied the first hat trick of her career and five other Bobcats registered points in the win.

“It was awesome,” senior Brooke Edwards said. “We were all just so stoked to play today and we came to the field with great energy and enthusiasm. It felt good to finally play against another team.”

Just five minutes into the game, the Green & White got on the board as Jue scored from her seat off a set-up by Edwards. Edwards, who finished third in the MAC last season with nine helpers, also assisted on Ohio’s second goal in the 21st minute. Taylor Brown, last year’s leading scorer for the ‘Cats with 15 goals, put two in the back of the net in a two-minute span that pushed the lead to 3-0.

Caelyn Hartley scored her first goal as a Bobcat to give the team a 4-0 lead before halftime. Ohio’s offensive onslaught of three goals in six minutes was aided by two assists from Cathryn Altdoerffer.

After intermission, Ohio continued to bombard the Red Flash goal as Jue scored her second goal off a corner that was received by Louzeth Schutte. Jue completed the hat-trick off a reverse and the ‘Cats led 6-0, 13 minutes into the second half.

“Coach Macmillan has had me just working around the net in the offseason,” Jue said. “I’m happy with how we played but we always think we can score more. This type of performance is something we’ve been building for all preseason and we were just excited to play.”

Edwards closed the scoring on the day with Altdoerffer notching her third assist. The junior from Conestoga, Pennsylvania matched her assist output from last season with her final helper of the afternoon.

“Dorf had a good drag flick and I just sat on the post and put it in,” Edwards said. “She and I are just used to that set up from so many reps during the offseason.”

Ohio captured its fourth home opener in five years, despite winning its season opener for the first time since 2008. The last time the Bobcats scored seven goals was a 7-0 win over Ball State last season.

Jen McGill recorded her second career shutout and first since 2009 as Ohio outshot SFU, 26-1, and held a 14-2 edge in penalty corners.

Ohio hosts Richmond at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
