ATHENS, Ohio - Behind goals from seniors Rachael Philpot (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Kelsey Pichel (Rochester, Mich.), and a shutout by sophomore Mattie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio), the Ohio women's soccer team earned its first win of the 2011 season with a 2-0 triumph over Pittsburgh at Chessa Field on Sunday afternoon.
Liston, who made five saves in the win, earned her seventh career shutout on Sunday. She is tied for third on the all-time shutout list with Jess MacLean. The clean sheet was Liston's first of the season.
Ohio (1-1) opened the scoring in the 24th minute. The run started down the right sideline as freshman Erin Feeney (Milton, Mass.) played a ball to senior Toye Famodu (Bloomington, Minn.). Famodu dribbled toward the box and found Philpot at the far post. Philpot headed the ball into the open net beyond the reach of Pittsburgh (0-1-1) goalkeeper Kristina Rioux. The `Cats claimed a 1-0 lead and never looked back.
Pichel added an insurance goal for the Bobcats at the 51:05 mark. She settled a ball that came from junior Erin Schwenke (Solon, Ohio). Schwenke's ball was played over the top of the box to Pichel on the left flank. Pichel blasted the ball over the hands of Rioux from 14 yards out to find the back of the net for fifth career goal.
The 2-0 lead was more than enough for the Bobcat defense. Liston made four saves in the second half and defenders Lauren Burke (Medina, Ohio), Kim Nordtveit (Newtown, Pa.), Remi Famodu (Bloomington, Minn.) and Paige Howard (Mentor, Ohio) help secure the first clean sheet of the year for the Bobcats.
Ohio held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal, but Pittsburgh led in shots 10-9. Philpot, who scored her fourth career goal in the match, tallied her second career game-winner at the 23:13 mark.
With the win, the Green & White moved to 3-1 all-time against Pittsburgh. The victory marked the second in as many years against the Panthers.
The Bobcats begin a three-game road trip on Friday, Aug. 26 at the University of Kentucky. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. in Lexington.
