KALAMAZOO, Mich.-Western Michigan right fielder Jack Scanlon had six of the Broncos' 14 RBIs Saturday as his contribution, along with a stout pitching effort, helped the home team secure a sweep over visiting Ohio with 5-0 and 11-3 wins Saturday afternoon at Bobb Stadium.
Western improved to 17-16 overall and 6-3 in the Mid-American Conference, while Ohio dropped to 15-17 and 2-7 in the league.
The two teams were originally scheduled to finish the series on Sunday but made Saturday's action a doubleheader with inclement weather in the forecast later this weekend.
Scanlon went 5-fo-9 on the day and scored three runs, while shortstop Patrick Duncan scored four times. First baseman Troy Forton also drove in four runs.
Ohio shortstop Garrett Black and center fielder Ethan Newton registered three hits apiece.
The Broncos got another dominating performance on the mound from starter Casey Webber (3-2) in the first game. He blanked the Bobcats over seven innings by allowing just five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Eric Heckaman nailed down his fourth save after yielding a hit in the last two innings with one strikeout.
Ohio starter Brent Choban (2-3) took the loss after giving up four runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in seven and one-third innings.
WMU third baseman Ryan McMillin knocked home the game's first run with a single to short in the second inning, while second baseman Zach Thoma knocked in the next one with a single to center in the third.
The Broncos added the last three in the eighth on a double to left by Duncan and two more RBIs from Forton.
Newton stole his 14th base of the season in the eighth inning.
Left fielder Jimmy Martinez stole home in the first inning of the second game to put the Broncos on top early.
Ohio evened the game in the top of the third on left fielder Jensen Painter's double to left center, his 10th of the season, but WMU came back with three in the bottom half.
The Broncos made it 7-1 with three more in the bottom of the seventh but Ohio added one in the top of the eighth on Black's single to right.
WMU notched four more in the bottom of that frame and Newton scored on a double play ball in the ninth for the game's final margin.
The Bobcats made four errors, which led to five unearned Bronco runs.
Burkhart stole second in the third inning for his second stolen base of the season.
WMU starter Steve Laudicina (4-2) got the win, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks in five innings. Reliever Chris Bossenberry got his second save, getting the last six outs, by giving up one run on two hits with a strikeout.
Ohio starter Jason Moulton (1-4) suffered the defeat, giving up five runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in six and two-thirds innings.
The Bobcats will host Eastern Kentucky at 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Bob Wren Stadium.
