Ohio got two hits from second baseman Bryan Barnes.
Scanlon and shortstop Patrick Duncan registered first-inning RBIs for the Broncos to take a 2-0 lead.
The game stayed that way until the seventh, when Ohio used an RBI double down the right field line by Streich to slice the margin in half.
WMU tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth after Forton's RBI bunt single and Whermeyer's two-run single up the middle.
Barnes' two hits were doubles to give him five on the season.
The two teams will play the final two games of the series on Saturday with a doubleheader that begins at 12 p.m. ET, rather than finishing Sunday due to oncoming inclement weather.
