ATHENS, Ohio-Central Michigan starter Jake Sabol had Ohio hitters baffled all day as the Chippewa baseball team shut out the Bobcats 9-0 in the series finale between the two teams Sunday at Bob Wren Stadium.
The Chippewas, who won two of three this weekend, improved to 12-17 overall and 2-4 in the Mid-American Conference. Ohio dropped to 14-13 and also 2-4 in the league.
Sabol (2-2) went the distance in 104 pitches, allowing six hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Ohio starter Jason Moulton (1-3) took the loss after giving up four earned runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in four and two-thirds innings.
CMU second baseman/shortstop Jordan Dean went 4-for-6 at the dish and designated hit Brendan Emmett went 3-for-5. Right fielder Matt Faiman, left fielder/center fielder Sam Russell and left fielder Scott Phillion all posted two hits as well.
First baseman Taylor Emody was the lone Bobcat with two hits.
The Chips got single runs in the first five innings, before getting two in the sixth and one each in the eighth and ninth.
Faiman homered to right in the fourth and Phillion followed with a solo shot down the left fielde line in the fifth.
Despite scoring the nine runs, CMU still left 16 men on base, while Ohio stranded eight.
Dean stole his seventh and eighth bases of the season in the third and sixth innings, respectively.
The Bobcats host West Virginia State on Tuesday and Xavier on Wednesday. The first pitch for both games will be 6 p.m. ET.
