Final Stats
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio-Bowling Green designated hitter Jeremy Shay ripped a two-run double to the gap in left center and powered an eighth-inning surge by the Falcons to win 6-3 Sunday over visiting Ohio at Warren Steller Field.
The win prevented the visiting Bobcats from completing a series sweep of the Falcons.
BGSU improved to 15-21 overall and 8-7 in the Mid-American Conference, while Ohio dropped to 19-21 and 5-10 in the league.
Catcher Ryan Schlater had two hits and two RBIs for the Falcons and first baseman Clay Duncan scored three times.
Ohio left fielder Kory Burkhart had two hits for the Bobcats, who left five men on base, compared to eight for BGSU.
Falcon reliever Ethan McKinney (2-4) took the win, throwing one and one-third perfect innings in relief. Mike Frank picked up his fifth save by allowing just a hit in the ninth. Starter Charles Wooten also pitched well, yielding just two earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout and one walk in six and two-thirds innings.
Ohio reliever Tyler Backstrom (2-1) took the loss, giving up a run and a hit in one and one-third innings. Starter Jason Moulton lasted five innings and gave up three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Reliever Brett Barber got the staff's last three outs, striking out two and walking one.
Unlike both games Saturday, the Falcons would be the team to jump out on top early as they got to Moulton for runs in both the second and third innings. Ohio chopped the lead in half in the fourth when Burkhart came home on a throwing error by BGSU shortstop Jon Berti.
After the Falcons pushed the lead back to two with a run in the sixth, the Bobcats tied the game at 3-all in the seventh when first baseman Taylor Emody scored on catcher Trace Voshell's bases-loaded ground ball and shortstop Garrett Black's infield hit that plated third baseman Dan Ward.
Shay then had the game's big hit when his double off Ohio reliever Ryan Burgett went all the way to the wall, allowing Duncan and second baseman Matt Pitzulo to score. Pinch-runner Taylor Rhoades later scored on a passed ball to give the Falcons a three-run cushion that the Bobcats would be unable to overcome in the ninth.
Ohio's Emody and Streich had doubles in the game, giving them five and 10 on the season, respectively.
The Bobcats will be back in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET when Youngstown State visits Athens and Bob Wren Stadium. That game will also be carried on WOUB 1340 AM in Athens with "Voice of the Bobcats" Russ Eisenstein and Grant Burkhardt on the call.
