Ball State Nips Ohio 1-0 to Win Series

MUNCIE, Ind.-Ball State pitchers Morgan Coombs and Devin Wilburn outdueled Ohio hurler Jason Moulton Sunday to give the Cardinals' baseball team a 1-0 victory over the Bobcats and the series win.

BSU improved to 4-18 overall and 2-1 in the Mid-American Conference, while Ohio dropped to 12-11 and 1-2 in the league.

Coombs (1-3) pitched six innings and allowed just two walks and four hits with five strikeouts. Wilburn got his first save after he was flawless over the last three innings, striking out one.

Moulton (1-2) took the hard-luck loss in his complete-game effort, allowing just a run on three hits with eight strikeouts and five walks.

The Cardinals got the game's only run in the first inning. After Moulton retired the first two batters, second baseman Mitch Widau and designated hitter Billy Wellman worked walks before third baseman Kenny Mahala singled to left to knock in Widau. Following another walk, Moulton coaxed an inning-ending popup by right fielder Cody Campbell.

The Bobcats had chances to tie or take the lead during the middle innings, but the stranded two runners on base in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth frames.

Center fielder Ethan Newton and shortstop Garrett Black had two hits apiece for Ohio. Newton stole his 10th base of the season in the first inning.

The Bobcats will be back in action Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET at Pittsburgh.
