Final Stats
MUNCIE, Ind.-One day after falling victim to a ninth-inning comeback, the Ohio baseball team used a strong performance in the frame to emerge victorious by a 5-4 score Saturday in the second game of the series between the Bobcats and Ball State.
Ohio improved to 12-10 and 1-1 in the Mid-American Conference, while the Cardinals dropped to 3-18 and 1-1 in the league.
Bobcat reliever Tyler Stage picked up the victory (2-0), allowing three hits with one strikeout in one and a third innings. Matt Robin got the final out of the game for his first save of the season.
BSU reliever Scott Brothers, Jr. (0-2) suffered the loss after giving up an unearned run with a walk in one inning of work.
Ohio left fielder Jensen Painter scored twice, while Cardinal center fielder Cody Elliott had two hits.
After the home team put up two runs in the second, Ohio got a run in the fifth on a single to right center by shortstop Garrett Black that scored first baseman Taylor Emody.
Two more runs came home in the sixth when BSU misplayed Emody's fielder's choice, which scored catcher Trace Voshell and Painter.
The Cardinals tied the game with a run in the sixth and both teams traded runs in the eighth before Ohio designated hitter Kory Burkhart contributed a bases-loaded infield single to score Black with the go-ahead run.
Stage and Robin made that run stand up in the ninth as the latter got second baseman Mitch Widau to ground out to first to end the game.
The two teams will play the series finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
