Ohio Earns Split in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Ca.-The Ohio softball team split a doubleheader Saturday evening at the San Diego State Softball Stadium in the San Diego Classic II, defeating Louisville 7-5 and falling to the host Aztecs 8-0 in six innings.

Ohio finished the day at 10-7 overall, while its win dropped Louisville to 17-9 and San Diego State moved to 16-14.

Bobcat left fielder Paige Kemezis finished the day with four hits, including a pair of homers against the Cardinals, to go with two runs scored, four RBIs and 10 total bases.

In the Louisville game, the Cardinals got two runs in the second inning, but Ohio roared back with four in the third. Shortstop Alexis Joseph knocked in the first one with a bunt single and that set up a three-run bomb to right by Kemezis, giving the Bobcats a 4-2 lead.

Louisville cut the lead to one with a tally in the fourth, but Ohio pushed the advantage back to four with three runs in the top of the fifth. Kemezis started the scoring with a one-out solo homer to left and pitcher Emily Wethington knocked in herself and right fielder/pitcher Melissa Bonner with a two-run shot to right.

The Cardinals cut the deficit in half with two runs in the seventh but Bonner got a groundout to third to end the contest.

Wethington (8-2) got the win, tossing the game's first six and one-third innings, with four earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Bonner registered her first save of the season with as she got the final two outs of the contest after she inherited a pair of baserunners.

Louisville pitcher Caralisa Connell (6-3) took the loss, as she surrendered five earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and three walks in four and one-third innings. Colby Wherry had three hits, while designated player Hannah Kiyohara drove in two.

In the second game, third baseman Sara Clark had two hits for the Bobcats, while Joseph, Kemezis, Bonner and center fielder Jillian Van Wagnen also reached with base knocks.

Second baseman Lindsey Marquez and first baseman Justeen Maeva had two hits for the Aztecs.

SDSU starter Bailey Micetich (10-7) picked up the win for the home team, tossing four and two-thirds innings with six strikeouts, while allowing just two hits. Ohio hurler Caitlin Colvin (7-5) was hit with the loss after surrendering six runs on three hits with no strikeouts and four walks.

The Bobcats face Cal State Northridge at noon ET and San Diego at 5:30 p.m. Sunday to wrap up the tournament.
