PHILADELPHIA, Pa.-The Ohio wrestling team sent a trio of members to this week's NCAA Championships at Wells Fargo Center and junior Nick Purdue advanced to Friday in the 174 lb. weight class.
Purdue started the day by defeating Ryan McGarity of Binghamton by a 10-3 score before falling to third-seeded Mack Lewnes of Cornell via pinfall in the second round. He will face Missouri's Dorian Henderson Friday morning in the next round of the consolation bracket. Henderson defeated Rider's Rob Morrison 4-1, fell to ninth-seeded Ethen Lofthouse of Iowa 8-2 and defeated Pennsylvania's Scott Griffin 9-1 on Thursday.
Ohio's Erik Schuth had a hard-fought match with 11th-seeded Jerome Ward of Iowa State in the first round of the 197 lb. draw, but fell by a narrow 4-3 margin. He then dropped a 7-3 decision to Ohio State's Peter Capone in the consolation round.
Jeremy Johnson represented the Bobcats in the 285 lb. bracket and rebounded from a first-round loss via pinfall to Oregon State's Clayton Jack with a 5-4 win over UNC Greensboro's Peter Sturgeon in the consolation round. However, he was also eliminated from competition by Iowa State's Kyle Simonson 3-0 in the next round.
