Robinson Nets Career High in Loss to Chippewas

ATHENS, Ohio- Ohio Women’s Basketball fell to MAC West opponent Central Michigan by a final score of 82-64 on Saturday in the Convocation Center. Shavon Robinson led the way for the Bobcats, scoring a career-high 18 points. Two other ‘Cats joined Robinson in double figures, as Symone Lyles (Silver Spring, Md.) scored 11 and Kamille Buckner (Chicago, Ill.) contributed 10.

The Bobcats (7-16, 3-7) couldn’t bounce back from a six-minute scoring drought at the start of the game which saw the Chippewas (15-7, 7-3) jump out to a 19-0 lead. Central Michigan connected on five of its first seven three-point shots during the run.

While redshirt junior guard Tenishia Benson (Akron, Ohio) put Ohio on the board first, connecting on one of two free throws at the 13:45 mark, it was freshman guard Robinson (Canton, Ohio) who ended the Bobcats’ scoring woes from the floor, connecting on a jumper which would ignite an 8-2 run for Ohio.

After the game’s opening run, Ohio was able to match the Chippewas over the remainder of the half, with each team scoring 25 points en route to a 44-25 score headed into the halftime locker room. 

The Bobcats opened the second half on an 8-3 run, allowing Central Michigan just one field goal in the first three minutes of the half. Ohio outscored the Chippewas in the second half, 39-38, taking advantage of a season-high 26 turnovers for Central Michigan, including 16 in the second half, which Ohio was able to convert into 15 points on the offensive end.

Central Michigan finished with five players in double figures, led by a combined 39 points from guards Shonda Long and Niki DiGuilio. Kaihla Szunko added a double-double for the Chippewas, scoring 12 points and pulling down a team-high 11 rebounds.

Robinson led the Bobcats in scoring for the second straight game and third time this season, surpassing her previous mark of 17 set against Western Michigan on Jan. 22nd. Robinson tied career highs with six field goals made and nine attempted free throws.

Benson led Ohio with in rebounding for the 11th time this season, pulling down seven boards.

Ohio has a week off before traveling to Toledo for a 4:30 p.m. match-up against the Rockets on Saturday, February 12.
