Post-Game Quotes

Head Coach Semeka Randall

Opening statement

First thing I’ll speak on is our seniors. They’ve done so much for the program and we really appreciate all of their hard work. They finished it out strong. It might not have always shown in the win-loss column but both of those ladies coming out and giving all they’ve got: I’m just really pleased with their performance. I can’t say enough about Thia Gholson. She’s a bionic woman: she just finds a way to keep constantly coming back. Her effort out on the floor and being out for so long offensively is a struggle because of being out of rhythm. But I’m really pleased at everything she gives. She’s truly committed to the University. I don’t want to take anything away from Kamille Buckner because she has some elements too that she’s been able to fight through and she’s a mentally-tough kid as well, but Thia Gholson is just an All-American in my mind.

As far as the game, it’s the same thing I’ve been sitting up here and saying since day one: you can’t play 38, 35, 26 minutes and expect to win. You have to play 40 minutes.

On if the team missed an opportunity in the first half with Akron in foul trouble

Oh absolutely. First half, I believe with 14 minutes to go we were in the one-and-one situation and we didn’t attack. The second situation is 2:40 left in the first half and they go on a 14-0 run. We just stopped playing. We came out with that attitude, that mentality to win a basketball game, like you should. Then we just said, “alright, let’s take two minutes and forty-some seconds off,” similar to the minute we took off in the second half.

On how difficult this loss was for the team

That hurt. It hurt. To work pretty much about 38 minutes and then to let two minutes really dictate the game, that hurts. It was a big game for our seniors and also for the rest of the team because we wanted to play hard for them. I know this isn’t their last game on this floor, however, it hurts. You want to win; you fight it out; you’re taking charges, making shots and running the floor: doing all of those little things to win and then not be able to pull it out, it definitely hurts.

Kamille Buckner

On the last two minutes of the game

I don’t know if we can use the excuse that we’re young. It’s just locking in and having the mentality that we’re going to finish these last three minutes out strong. I think the game just kind of slipped through our fingers. We allowed it to. We didn’t take control of the game in the last couple of minutes even though we could have seen it going away from us and gotten it back. But I feel like we didn’t do a good job of kind of coming back to our level.
