CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Ohio softball team finished second at the Buccaneer Invite after beating host Charleston Southern 1-0 before dropping the championship game 3-2 against Virginia Tech.
A common theme at the Buccaneer Invite was Emily Wethington's (3-2) dominance against opposing hitters that continued in Ohio's victory over CSU.
Wethington struck out six Buccaneers, while allowing five hits to grab the complete game victory. She also contributed to the Green and White's offense with a double, finishing 2-for-4.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Alexis Joseph drew a walk with the bases loaded in the second inning to score Jordan Paden. That is where the score stayed to pit the Bobcats against the Hokies, a team it beat 2-1 on Friday, for the title.
Ohio wasted no time against VT, scoring two runs in the first inning. After a Wethington single and walks by Lauren Gellerman and Caitlin Colvin, Sara Clarke drove in two runs with a shot up the middle to make the score 2-0.
However, Virginia Tech struck back with three runs of its own in the second inning, leaving the Hokies with a 3-2 advantage.
The `Cats looked for late game heroics, but fell just short after a potential game-tying run was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice in the bottom half of the seventh.
Colvin received the loss in the circle despite an impressive performance, striking out two in over five innings of work.
Ohio takes a short break before returning home March 5th when they welcome Cleveland State and Western Illinois to the Ohio University Invitational.
